Looks like the remains of tree limb parts from inside the trunk. Find them all the time as drift wood in the river, usually full of turpentine which is why they are dense.Walking our local sea islands near Edisto SC, I came across several piles of these, each scattered within a few square yards of each other. I know what they are and how they formed. Each is cone-shaped and extremely dense. Any guesses?
