So I want to go on a goat hunt....

Yeah, you are 100% correct. It is public information and the Idaho F&G site shows that that tag had 100% success every year but one so there are goats there. There are other units that have nearly as good of odds in Idaho as well, I guess that $155 license to apply for a tag really helps out on odds.

Of course in 10 years that will add up to $1,550 in licenses purchased, but in 10 years you would have a pretty decent chance of drawing a tag. The price of the tag being a smidge over $2,000 probably doesn't encourage a lot of applications either.

If having public info bothers you I suppose I could just add a link. I don't see how its an issue as anyone who is serious about it will find it I just figured I would make it easier. Not sure about your Huntin' fool reference but if he doesn't have a problem posting this kind of info I guess we could be on the same page. I would hope to get this kind of information if I posted a question.

This is exactly why people are hesitant to help others. You never know when you'll inadvertently help someone who is too willing to share. :)

Yep. Often why newcomers don't get the info they desire either. Loose lips sink ships... :D

It would be handy if a guy could do that same thing with a PM....wait a minute....;)

Wow, it looks like Idaho is the state to go to for DIY mountain goat hunting assuming you are not dead set on shooting a trophy goat.

Unit 50 was not the best odds in 2009 which is the last year the results are posted on the website. There was one unit with 33% drawing odds in 2009 and the hunters who drew were 100% successful! 6 hunters applied for 2 tags!

There are 8 different units with odds of 10% or better. In nearly all of the units the success rates are 100% most years with occasional years where they drop down and I did see one unit with success rates of 0% for one year so it isn't a for sure thing by any means.

Is the trophy quality of the goats in Idaho that bad compared to the other states?

I think I would be happy with just a nice representative billy. Am I on the right track?

Thanks, Nathan

Just looked some more at Idaho. I guess I have to buy the $155 license to be able to apply for the draw? I knew there had to be a catch somewhere. I guess I could apply for sheep too and that way I would get a chance at 2 tags for my $155 license.

npaden is incorrect you do not get a chance to put in for sheep and goat in Idaho. That is why the odds are so good. Do not worry about odds in specific units. As you can see from the above dialogue people see great odds in a unit and then the next year the odds get worse. Idaho goat odds are as good as anywhere, pick a unit and start applying. Trophy potential is decent, I am after age and hair. A non-resident friend of mine drew a tag in a year when only 6 people applied for 2 tags. Another freind from Utah had his son apply that same year and he drew. These were two of the 4 non-resident Idaho gaot tags issued that year. If you need help with units PM me. I have monitored 5 or 6 over the last five years or so. Good Luck and I hope 2011 is my year.

I thought about that too. With only XX applications one post on the internet could knock those odds out the window.
Thanks, Nathan

Too late...me and 6 buddies discussed and decided this morning to put in for that tag figuring one of us will draw every other year till we all get goats.:D

FYI, in ID you will learn you can only apply for one OIL (Sheep, goat, moose) species per year. That is why the odds are so decent across the board. Wish more states did it that way. UT used to but got greedy for apps dollars and opened the floodgate.

Seriously, there is no good reason to post very specific great draw opportunities online. 90 percent of everybody is too lazy or disinterested to look up readily available info for themselves. But serve it on a platter and all of a sudden you have competition. Sad but true, IMO.

Big Fin should expunge the offending post as he would illicit porn. Hurts my eyes to see that sort of thing online:eek:

...so 4 tags?

Okay, maybe the odds aren't looking as good. I noticed not many nonresidents were drawing and I also notice that you could only apply for one OIL type animal so with many more people going the sheep route that helps explain the decent drawing odds for goats.

I'll have to run the numbers for the 90/10 split, I think the nonresident odds are going to be worse than the resident odds. I was just looking at total odds of drawing.

How does the split work though? If there was a unit with just 6 applicants for 2 tags and one of the winners was a nonresident I guess they must be looking at it more on a total basis than on a unit by unit basis.

On the Colorado site they specifically list the number of tags available to residents and nonresidents so it's pretty straightforward. They have quite a few more tags than Idaho does though.

I think I will just forget the odds and start applying anyway! ;)

IIRC, ID doesn't garantee NRs any tags, but caps the amount that can be had by NRs. I could be way off.

The reason that the odds in many of the goat units in ID are as reasonable as they are is because the country is very unfriendly. I've been on 1 goat and 2 sheep hunts in ID and they are much more fun to talk about after the fact.

But they do have mtn goats in ID!

just to throw this out there.....

I too want a goat hunt, been looking at Idaho for a couple of years, after you draw and pay the $$$ for the tag, I think goat hunting in Idaho "Requires" an out of state resident to "hire" a guide. I am not certain of this, but think it true based on my previous research. one reason is I think Goat hunting is still the "Most dangerous" game animal in N America, due to the location, altitude, rugged mtns etc. lots of falls and broken bones and sprains etc. {I could be wrong on this detail - and hope I am but if anyone knows for sure..}

I hope I didn't give away any insider info on this .....

also if you want to hunt Goat, sheep (2 diff species) , moose --- you can only choose one of those 4 to put in for, impossible to draw more than one of those in the same year.

I think you may be thinking about the Wyoming guide requirement. I double checked and found nothing about Idaho requiring a guide.

I killed a 9-3/4 inch billy here in Idaho and also guided on another 9-1/2 billy a few years ago. No guide needed for out of state tag holders. There are very good DIY goat hunting opportunities in Idaho. The goats may not B & C , but very nice ones for the lower 48 IMHO.

I may be able to help if looking for wilderness ideas. There is a great population in the area I like to hunt.

I guess I could apply for sheep too and that way I would get a chance at 2 tags for my $155 license.

In Idaho you can only apply for goat OR sheep OR moose in the same year. If you apply for goat this year, all other draw hunts are off limits including elk, deer and antelope unless the draw you are putting in for has unlimited tags.
