Amid all the acrimony, bad news (and good news), and madness - something really cool is happening again. The annual waterfowl migration is underway at Freezeout Lakes WMA. Currently estimated 70-100 thousand snow geese, 4000 swans, various other fowl. Geese #'s will probably continue to go up. If you've never seen it against the backdrop of the Front, and maybe even cooler - heard it, you need to do it at least once. Snow geese as thisk as clouds. Anything over 100,000 geese is when I consider it go time. Try and pick a sunny day, good luck the way this spring has been.

Was hoping to make it this weekend...wife is sick with the bug rampantly sweeping thru BozeAngeles and weather forecast ain't the greatest. For those willing to brave the weather, this is probably a great time. I'm shooting for next weekend. Can't recommend this opportunity enough.

Weather doesn't look good, but hoping to visit some leks next weekend. Gotta get over there now.

I thought i seen on TV that the snows were so overpopulated that they have depleted the area they nest of any vegetation. Is that still the case?
waay cool picture, i can't imagine what kind of noise that would produce.

The sound is truly awesome...not "dude that's awsome" awesome. The kind of awesome that actually defines the word. If it is possible, I can post a short video on here which captures some of the sound. But I think it's probably too big.

Sorry, you've hit one of my walls. Don't know what photobucket is, don't care to. I like this website but usually practice contempt prior to investigation with most stuff on the web.
I'm sure if you do a search , you'll be able to find some good footage somewhere on the WWW. Good luck...even better, attempt to make it out here to experience it for yourself someday:)

we are heading to freezeout either thise weekend or next weekend, does anyone know how next weekend should compare in numbers of birds?

I'll hopefully be there next weekend also. If birds keep arriving for a couple more days, then hang out for a bit, could be well over a hundred grand by then (maybe tomorrow too). I was there for an estimated 150000 count....spectacular. Watch for a Blue Honda CRV, if next weekend, say hi. If you go this, good luck.

thanks, sounds like this week and next weekend are fantastic. ill shoot you a pm before next weekend to let you know how to recognize us, i dont know whether we are driving the Hummer or the Lexus yet ;)

I'd really like to see that!! I'm hoping to get to a WMA here in IN this fall for the SHC migration.

Tony's got some great stills, but could definitely upgrade the Tonka video camera! ;)
