Shotgun for Elk

I've done this. More than once. It ain't hard. mtmuley

In the same post you cited, I said I did too..
sounds like you haven’t shot a scoped, rifled-bore shotgun with a sabot out to 100-150 with accuracy. It’s too easy…

I will say, every time I’m packing my old single shot, I have 2 slugs with my extras in the sleeve on the stock.

Remington 870. Crappy scope might be a Bushnell or Tasco. 12 gauge. 50 yards is my max. Ha it's a Simmons. 20260813_175609.jpg

A guy I work with went on a "hunting" trip with some buddies at a game farm in Ohio. One buddy took a savage 220 and I believe he used Remington green tips. Shot an elk at 80 yards and dropped it, also shot a bison but that took a few rounds.

I use the 220 and shoot Winchester copper through it and it's good out to around 100 yards, 120 is the max. Can use the federal copper freight trains in 3" that will easily go 150 with a max of 170. But that's for whitetail.

You could always check the ballistics and see what minimum energy you are willing to to hit an elk with and then check that against the slugs capabilities.

I cannot speak to the efficacy of shotguns slugs on moose or elk, but I can say with great confidence they are absolutely lethal on wt deer. They kinda suck to shoot and aren't usually in the best platform for accuracy, but inside 100 yards a 0.73 caliber projectile can really do some damage.
I agree. Keep it within 100 yds and it’s lethal.

I shot a cow elk years ago with a 12 gauge slug. Range was 50 yards and it worked just fine. It was a Kate season private land tag and the owner wouldn’t let me use a rifle.

I have a cantilever rifled slug barrel for my Browning Gold in 12ga. 2X7 Leupold on top. I still have a few boxes of Winchester Supreme slugs that sling a 385 grn Partition Gold slug at 1900 fps. I would be comfortable using that on Elk out to 100. Maybe a tad farther.

Savage 112… 12 gauge rifled barrel with a Remingcton sabot slugs are hard on anything including the shooter but id imagine it would do fine on an elk up to 200 yds…
