Shot to kill ratio

Are we counting clean misses or just shots on an animal that you ultimately killed?

2020 3 bow for a turkey (2 clean misses on other birds)
2019 Elk 1, deer 2, bear 2, turkey 1
2018 Elk 1, deer 1, caribou 2, pronghorn 1, turkey 1 bow, turkey 1
2017 Elk 5, deer 1, turkey 1,
2016 Elk 1, deer 1, deer 1, pronghorn 1, bear 1, turkey 1, box at another pronghorn and missed every single time 🤦‍♂️... range finder was purchased.
2015 Bear 3, pronghorn 1, elk 1, pronghorn 1, mule deer 1, white tail 2 (shotgun, buck shot), Turkey 1
2014 deer 3, pronghorn 3, whitetail 2 (shotgun slugs)
2013 no shots fired
2012 Bear 1, turkey 1 (first year hunting)

The pronghorn was hopefully an outlier...the elk in 2017 is the only thing that I’ve shot that left my field of view before it died. If whatever I shoot doesn’t drop on the spot it gets a second shot. 🤷‍♂️
1.53

For upland and ducks I’m pretty terrible.

Clean misses are like fight club... and good call on the turkeys. Forgot about those little buggers.

I average a little over 1 apiece on deer and antelope, haven’t had to shoot a smaller animal twice for a while. My average is right around 2.5 per elk, some one shot kills and some that took 2-3. With elk I shoot until they’re down.

This would’ve been a great thread for ol stay sharp and his space age arrows. I bet that gunslinger is well under 1:1 on yard deer and Haitian moo cows or whatever it was...
I guess I missed out on his tall tales. Probably for the best.

#humblebrag OSOK on deer, turkeys, and pigs. 1.5 on elk, Coyotes...mostly 2 yips & a miss. Many a pig or yote have abruptly walked & left me shot-less. Dove and, especially, quail keep me digging for shot shells.

The last 10 were with 11 shots. I used to hunt with a constant power scope prior to that and there were a lot of rounds flung that completely missed. Mostly due to problems estimating holdover by body height and the like.

Me:
2019: pronghorn buck - 1 shot; zebra - 1 shot; sable - 1 shot; Kudu - 1 shot; pronghorn buck - 2 clean misses due to scope turret CZL2 error (discussed on other posts)

2018: cow elk - 1 shot; pronghorn buck - 1 shot

Son:
2019: Gemsbok - 1 shot; Reedbuck - 1 shot; Blesbok - 1 shot; pronghorn buck - 2 shots (1 clean miss, 1 hit/kill)

Many years prior to 2017, deer stand whitetails with 30-30 - mostly 1 shots from 30-70yds.

Buck 150yd 1 shot
2014 Cow 275yd 1 shot
all 0-06
6 yrs of no shots with few solid opportunities on trophy type bulls succeeding years before.....gave up on that stuff. 06 & mz
Don't remember how many BT bucks & pigs I shot up with my trusty old 30-30,but they were all down....lol

Wt archery
2017- 2 Osok spine shots on 2 deer that gave me a distorted perception of the killing power of a bow and my blood trailing abilities.
2018-2 one shot dnr’s and 2 shots and 2 hits on one recovered deer.
2019-one shot dnr on a doe and a osok on a button buck.

Elk.
2019- 2 shots, 2 hits one recovered elk.

Squirrels- osok =.52 cents per meal but sometimes the cost me $3.12

My last 3 archery kills had 1 thing in common... I got a range on the actual animal. Next year I think my rules gonna be no shots past 20 yards without ranging them first.

My connecting shot to kill ratio is right around one, but I always seem to miss the first follow up shot somehow. Now for turkeys this year I was 1 miss, 1 hit the year before not so good. Lets just say I wasn't aiming correctly with my short stock and went about a box a bird.

I read this wrong at first thinking you took 5 elk in 2017 and so on...

i say the number of shots taken before punching the tag, miss on a different animal or not.

really it should almost be a shots per tag ratio to capture what i think the ratio should capture in my mind - which is the ability to hunt effectively, efficiently, carefully, slowly, get close, think before your shots etc. i kind of also think of it as the "ethical ratio"
