Good luck to all you guys out there today, immersed in the pleasure we call elk hunting. A pleasure and freedom beyond what words can adequately describe, only found in a few places on earth, with the western United States being the epicenter for such celebration.

Sitting in the San Fran airport as I type this makes me realize how lucky I am to live in a place with such bounty of opportunity and equally void of the masses of humanity found tightly packed into these crowded places people like to call civilization. If this is civilization, I hope I live an uncivilized life and die a man known for his incivilities. May my friends remember me for partaking in the debauchery of elk camp more often than most and smiling all the while, even when the elk were not cooperating.

Long live the elk! Long live the elk hunter!

well I thought I was going to have a great start to the season as I had located a few bulls and had seen elk on several scouting trips just prior to the season opening, including 3 bulls the night before the season...Since then I have seen 3 deer and not a sign of an elk

Nice pics guys. I haven't been elk hunting in 8 years! Really making me want to get back into it. I haven't connected yet but have a great time anyway. My Grandpa and I go togther. He just had 2 knees put in because he wants to go on the mountain one more time. He has never shot one and would love to be the one with him when he does. That Kentucky bull is massive. I almost took a transfer to kentucky this year just for that reason. And when I told the wife they had a small black bear season{she wants to go bear hunting} I thought the deal was sealed. But decieded to stay close to family.

Here are some pictures from 2009. This is my favorite way to hunt, out of a backpack, hiking into the back country, away from the crowds and in the elk! My dad and I setup camp 5 miles from the trailhead and I called in this nice bull another mile past camp. I quartered and boned the elk and put the meat in game bags and placed them in the shade. Then we headed back to camp, broke it down and headed to the trailhead/truck. We left our packs there, ate lunch, grabbed our packframes and headed back to pack out my bull. All in all, it was about a 20 mile day.
