Time has come for this crusty SOB to start this thread as the CO app is just around the corner and plans are brewing. For certain (at this point) seems to be 2nd Season for deer and elk and Indiana for Mr. Whitey. I have also put in an app for a the draw hunt in IL (this year will be the first year for straight wall cartridges and I will use the boy's 44 mag Handi Rifle if drawn). If some stars align there might even be a trip or two to Wisco!! I will try and keep up as best as possible. Hopefully my new rifle setup will be ready for deer this year!!

Monday was the draw for the hunt I try for in IL each year now. Tuesday I got a call informing I didn't get drawn but was 2nd alternate with a very good chance of getting a call. I was a bit disappointed but took it as an "oh well". Yesterday I get a call and text again from the hunt manager. Gist of it was Sorry....we made a mistake.....missed the section of the app that ID'd you as a Wounded Warrior.....you are in! Good news in the dull drums of Spring for me. This year I will be toting the 44 mag Handi Rifle in celebration of IL's entry into the straight wall world!!

Last night I booked a flight for the first week of June headed to Wisco!!! I will be relaxing and drinking....err um....I mean fishing for a week. I will be a nice break in the non-hunting portion of the calendar.

I leave Friday for Wisconsin and that is soothing the pain of drawing no deer tags at all for the first time in 11 years. I have to say it was a surprise and a bit of gut punch given all I saw last year was a TON of deer in our area. Looks like my deer will be IN and IL only ;/

You betcha.....Minong area
Gear is ready to load when I get home from work. Getting new tires on the Jeep this morning. It is going to be a bit cramped in the Jeep, have to take Casey's wheel chair because her new leg isn't in yet. It is only about 4.5 hrs from Madison and we will stop for lunch to break that up. I hear drags ripping and loons calling already!

Fishing is of to a good start even though it is hot currently (high 80s). Suppose to cool down some during the week. First couple of days we have a 2 keeper bass, a bunch of small ones, a Pike and a load of bluegill (including several chunky pumpkinseeds).

The week keeps rolling. The early part of the day brought us a bunch of keeper bluegill (including a couple whopper Pumpkinseeds) and some fun but non keeper bass and pike. We took a midday break and late in the day I went down to the dock with some leaches. Pulled these bluegill and keeper bass. Listening to loons at night is pretty darn relaxing.

Today was beautiful weather and good fishing. Sun and 70s. A bunch of keeper bluegills a 4 keeper pike. My biggest was just under 26in and Casey pulled a 28in er. Shoulder is a little sore from winding that reel. 😉

Final day of fishing is in the books and it was a BIG day for bass. Joel and I went out and crushed them early for about 2.5 hours on lizards. Then we headed to Hayward for lunch (highlight of the trip? SFC B found and destroyed a salad bar!!!). Let the heart of the day pass then went back out. Caught a few more pike trolling then settled back on the edge of the weed bed from the morning. Not quite as active but still lots of bass and few more keepers. Ended up with 6 keeper(14in +) bass and 4 crappie (3 me, 1 Casey). All are sore from fishing 🎣 😀.

Lunch update.....stopped at the Norske Nook in Rice Lake...sweet baby Jeebus!! I had raspberry cream cheese, Joel and Casey had pecan cream cheese and chocolate peanut butter . .all of them 🔥
I had to go for a 8 mile walk yesterday to burn that pie off but it was worth it! Back to work today to rest up..
