Self defense pistol recommendations.

I don't know how you'd prove what is more reliable between stoppages of an auto vs revolver. For sure, there are lots of issues with magazines. I'm sure you can buy bad ammo for both.

But, for occasional self-defense duty with very few shots, does it matter if you can shoot thousands of rounds?

Fwiw, I prefer S&W revolvers because they are very easy to swap springs and have an even better trigger.

A good semiauto is 100% more reliable for maximum rounds between stoppages than a revolver, despite what many say… I can’t even tell you how many rounds I’ve put through Glocks with almost zero maintenance without malfunction. Many, many thousands. A good 1911 is up there too, they just need a little more maintenance.
This. All the talk about limp wristing. I’ve taught a few folks how to shoot a Glock and the number of malfunctions that occur because of this are not common.

Yeah, i thought all that too till my buddy had a sow with two cubs come charging in. The first round went off fine. Not much luck after with a stove pipe. 6-4 220lb dude, not a ton of time with gun though but still made me think. The other incident was the guy that got his jaw messed up (isn’t he a member?). Wasn’t that a Glock malfunction? I’m sure it’s rare, but thats two guys that hunt same country I spend a lot of days in.

My buddy that shoots tons of CQC in the seals for 10 years, still active duty and loves his Glock, (why I have one). To each their own, I don’t like speaking in absolutes.

If you get down to Boze give me a shout and we can meet at the range in Logan and shoot a few. I go there 30-40 times a year working with my G43X, G17, G20 and my fav of all my P365 with an Optic. I also have a S&W 360 which you're welcome to give a go as well, with full bore 357's it's a caustic prick! But, nice to carry.

For me the P365 with Optic has become my day to day carry piece, the G17 is a dream to run but bigger and heavier.

For sure I'd want either an Optic or night sights. Keep in mind that with the Optic one needs a big enough dot in it.

I've a firm belief that if one is going to carry to protect then it's best to shoot it as much as possible to be in touch with it.

Always fun to see how these threads evolve. hahaha
I always enjoyed the PSA 5.7. Worth a look for your use case.

These threads often become people defending what they have (I’m guilty above). This one fits the bill on your original ask pretty well. Low recoil, capable, ammo is a bit harder to find but sounds like 4 boxes would last you a couple years. I always enjoyed shooting this and the 1911 Staccatos out of all the pistols we had at work. And we had them all.

You’d need people to do tests like these:
https://pistol-training.com/gen4-glock-17-endurance-test-month-16/

The Cliffs Notes is in 71,260 rounds Todd’s Glock had 19 stoppages, a little bit better than 1:3,500. IIRC his M&P test had similar results. I’m no handgun SME, but the ones I listen to tell me modern striker fired guns are more reliable, more shoot-able, and if only obvious carry more rounds and are easier to reload.

I was the same way, then I shot a G43X. The “single stack” glocks are a good 3/8” thinner. My G48 is almost the exact same size as a G19, but 3/8” thinner. The Shield mags give you the same round count as well, and the new Glock mags (metal) do as well.
That would be an improvement!

We used to have a saying….. What ever the question, Glock 19 is the answer. Buy one handgun to do it all.

But with some of the newer Glock 9mm models (43/43x/48, etc) may not be quite than simple. However the general idea is still solid.
