After decades of 60 hour weeks I am pulling the plug this winter. So, for those who have walked this path before me I welcome your insights, wisdom, suggestions, learnings, watch-outs, must-dos, anecdotes, funny stories, etc. I look forward to hearing from you all.

(If the context helps, I just turned 59, am out of shape but in general good health, have a great wife, 3 adult kids (plus 1 SIL) in various phases of "adulting", 1 grand-daughter, a solid core of buddies, zero interest in any part-time work/consulting, and way too many hobbies and interests that have sat on the shelf.)

Congratulations in advance! For me and many others, retirement is the opportunity to pursue the things that matter to you, separate from needing to work and earn. From your list here, what stands out as being most worth your time and attention? Any things that seem like unfinished (life) business? Below is a tool used to help people discover and rank their personal values, as distinct from the values others place on you.

Activities and relationships that bring to life your personal values are likely to be most meaningful to you. I hope you keep us informed, because nobody else knows how you roll. There is an 'I' in retire, so you will be the expert on yours.

P.S. I was surprised to realize how much I enjoyed doing the basic parts of my career once I retired from agencies, employers, bosses, auditors, colleagues who were past caring, and could do it on my own schedule. I still work, only as much as I want and no more.

Congratulations!

Next month I'm coming up on 1 year of being retired, and highly recommend it! I have so many people ask me "what are you going to do?" My standard answer is always "Not work" 😁
I think you have a good plan for starters - "zero interest in any part-time work/consulting, and way too many hobbies and interests that have sat on the shelf."
My advice, live life as you wish, do whatever the heck you want each day! Best of luck to you!
