For anyone who cares about the status of the ruffed grouse "back east," there's a new paper summarizing a study done in the Appalachian region at http://www.kdfwr.state.ky.us/pdf/acgrpreport.pdf . One interesting result of many is that hunting at current levels had negligible effect on the population. As usual, habitat is key to overall improvement.
