RIP Charlie Kirk

Oh please, there literally was a school shooting the same day as Kirk's assassination. It received virtually no coverage. Other than thoughts and prayers, school shootings are a story for a day or three, and then placed on a back burner.

The Columbine school shooting happened in 1999. They have been far too frequent since then. They will continue, and we aren't inclined to take any changes to curb them.
How do we "curb" the violence of a mentally ill nut job? Asking for a friend. Make guns harder to get, or making sure people have mental health issues addressed early on? It's the fork and the fat people argument. In 2023 there were 351 shootings, as of this year, only 158.

How about getting rid of social media for a start. I can think of other things like fixing our food system and not using meds as a catch all quick fix but those are more complex, nuanced subjects.

I totally agree with that. Although this is considered social media, at least we can have conversations on here and not share stuff that people should never see. I don't think we're going to solve the world's problems. I think there's a large amount of stuff that we need to fix first. Mental health being the first.

I think we should get rid of all media outlets at this point. They do nothing more than mislead and provide shitty “hot takes.”

I’m just sad at what’s it’s all become at this point.

Violence and divisive rhetoric is seeping into our daily lives. It poisons conversations, relationships, and communities.

It’s incredibly heartbreaking watching our country that should be a beacon of opportunity, hope, and dignity devolve into such bitterness and cruelty.

It’s all become so exhausting and sickening.

I think that would be something that could pass with bipartisan support. No social media accounts until 18 etc etc.

Would love to see it. I saw 10-12 year olds after church this week watching the NSFW assassination video on tiktok. Our youth doesn’t need social media and would be much better off without it.

In a lot of those cases the shitty "hot takes" were coming from law enforcement investigators.

Personally for me, the worst part is I no longer feel anything when I hear of a shooting. Not sadness. Not anger. And certainly not surprise. Basically nothing. I want it to stop, for the sake of future generations, but don't know what the solution is for any of this.

What is the primary difference between our nation, and other developed nations that have virtually no school shootings?

Interesting how some didn't notice the division started over 20 years ago. I guess they lived in their echo chamber.

Later censorship kicked in on most forums and then social media. There are so many people out there that believe anything they read, and when the record can't be corrected due to censorship ... they become radicalized with false information.

There are still people out there that are convinced that the "rules" created by govts and corps made sense for Covid. Unfortunately, those people vote, too.

I'm not sure how to fix it. Maybe it's like eating an Elephant ... one bite at a time.

No they weren’t. I’m referring to the “hot takes” of “we don’t know if this was a targeted attack or if one of his supporters was shooting a gun off in celebration.” You know..since it’s so legal to fire a gun on a college campus.

Stabbings mainly. Mass stabbing in other countries are insane with the body count. We have been lucky that most mass shooters seem to not be very effective with a gun.

You are selecting a specific one. I was referencing all of the information that hit the headlines. New narratives are being formed now. That’s the game.

How about “love the neighbor” you don’t literally have to love your neighbor but treat them and anyone else how you want to be treated.

I read many moons ago that our downfall began when the automatic garage opener became popular because people just drove in and shut the door instead of having get out where they would often interact with their neighbor.

If we want to talk about a serious and quick fix to school shootings it’s take 1/10000000 of a percent of our DOD (W?) budget and put armed guards in every school. Allow teachers who are willing to train and carry (not forced). But this suggestion scares people for reasons beyond logic. It’s the only way to stop a school massacre tomorrow, the other solutions are going to take decades.

I went to high school in early 2000s, had two armed police officers on site at all times. No one cared, not even a little. We were safe.

I went to high school in the ‘80s, our school was on the San Antonio City border. Most of the football players n all the coaches had shotguns in their trucks, we would go dove hunting behind the school after practice… no school shootings…plenty fights but no weapons….something has changed

Children spend most of their time on social media of one form or another. Days months, years go by inidated by bots, tit tok, instascam, fake news etc. Wonder why we/they are numb to violence. Parents are captive to their phones. Looking away from their children, many feel alone. Drifting away from what matters most in life, God, family, community and outdoors. Yet we wonder why mental health is at an epedmic level. And monsters like the one that shot Charlie appear. We have have lost our way in many respects. Charlie spoke of God and God's plan for us, hope, family values, US history and of course politics and it cost him everything. No accountability just a soulless 22 year old. What a sad moment in time. Although, there is hope. You see the strong family values on this forum. I read your post and find inspiration in your different stories and what you hold true in life. Different view points and opinions bring us together and god's outdoors nuture's and heals us. There is hope and it isn't found on a phone or social media. It's found in your heart.

Even with all the noise and pain in the world, I always come back to this simple truth. Most everyday people are good hearted despite what media likes to spin.

We can all choose to show up everyday with kindness and willingness to help our family, neighbors, community it all still matters.

I agree 100%, it's sad we have come to this reality but that's where we are. I believe there are retired police officers and veterans in most counties who would gladly show up to protect our kids at school. They should be compensated as such too.
