Quick Clip Bighorn Sheep Headbutting.

The whole anatomical structure that allows those sheep to brutalize each other like that is sort of amazing. This last September, when I was doing the gutless method thing on my first-ever ram, I hit a major snag when it came time to separate the head from the spine. I was on the struggle bus for an hour, it seemed. Just unreal how different they are than, say, a pronghorn, deer, or elk. It was almost like they have a another hip socket resting at the base of their skull. Amazing, really. It’s not a quick snap and you’re done. That’s for sure.

In my taxidermy shop I have skinned a few Audoud, Corsicans, Texas Dall, etc. (No bighorn) and they pretty much all have some type of gristle on the back of their skull. Looks like it acts as some type of shock absorbers.
