Proposed "Wolf" Buffer Zone Around Yellowstone

It's not about the collared wolves. That is just the Trojan Horse for a bigger issue of reducing wolf hunting areas wherever a case might appeal to the public. If it was about collared wolves, just make collared wolves off limits; problem solved. But that is not the bigger agenda, so no one wants to talk about that.

You know what I want for Christmas?

A bison hunt in YNP. Just like they do for elk in Grand Teton or TR NP.

That's the discussion we should be having.

You know what I want for Christmas? A mandate to end domestic sheep conflicts for bighorn sheep. How do we make BHS the darling of the "environmentalist?" ;) They don't provide enough hunting opportunity for hunters to be interested.

Make it profitable for them, and they will have a 501(c)(3), a 501(c)(4), and a full blown marketing campaign up and running by tomorrow morning.

Rename him on of the bovine, cash cow, species "Ovis cashus daily" and you're set.

I agree, that would be a great Christmas present.

That's funny, Ben. I've been having this conversation for years with my family. If we could somehow replace emotion with common sense, this could be accomplished relatively easily. Holding the hunt in the late-fall right before the road closures would result in near-zero tourist conflicts. YNP knows the bison numbers and the Park's carrying capacity. Getting hunters to apply & pay for the privilege would provide revenue for further bison (and other wildlife) management. And splitting the Park into separate units (like Lamar, Hayden Valley, Blacktail, Canyon, etc) would avoid excessive hunter congestion.

It'll never happen, but it should happen if common sense actually won out in such cases.

I see what you did here. :)

Oregon hunters and RMEF members have communicated that they are not very happy with Mr. Defazio. RMEF has decided a little reminder of how we got here and why a Yellowstone Buffer Zone has no place in the recovery plan as agreed to or in the state plans as adopted by the USFWS.

It just amazes me that someone from Oregon puts forth a "dumb idea" (IMO) that has no direct impact on their very own State and now others have to expend time and resources that this "idea" is not necassary. Once the wildlife leave the exterior boundaries of Yellowstone it now becomes the responsiblity of the States immediately adjacent to manage the wildlife. Pretty simple concept.

+1 "well written from RMEF".

FWIW, last year there was a group who had set up a table on the lawn at Mammoth and were gathering signatures for just this thing, They had to get a permit to do this, but apparently it was legal and the Park couldn't stop it, although they had a disclaimer posted in front of them.
