Paint

Vinyl siding is cost effective and gotten a lot better over the years. In some places still considered cheap. Hardi board siding gives a better look and is tougher. However assuming it is painted you need to keep up with it every dozen years. Just my opinion

So which siding is best? Kids in Kansas are redoing their siding.
In my opinion it’s hard to beat a good boxed steel siding like Edco for durability and low maintenance. I have LP Smartside on my house because I like to look of it.

Make sure they or whoever they hire understand how to install housewrap and flash correctly. I see some terrible installations by siding contractors all the time.

how high is the outside trim? Do you have ladders to get that high? Renting a lift for half a day may speed up the process and be safer.
Most is 8 foot with some higher spots in the front. Got tons of ladders and will just suffer through it.
You’ve started multiple Alaska DIY threads this month. Let’s not kid ourselves. 😂
Funny you mention this. I would typically do as @Nuts did and just pay a professional. But I'm going to alaska in May for a black bear hunt plus a out of state turkey hunt the month before that. So funds are a bit light for hired labor. Fortunately I grew up with a father that never paid for anyone else to work on any of our stuff. So I know how to work hard and be handy I just try to avoid it at all cost (except missing out on hunting).

Think I might spring for the sprayer though. Any thoughts on Graco brand or others I should look at?

Benjamin moore, Sherwin Williams are about the same and highest quality, most expensive. Behr is good. The real issue is with BM and SW they have standalone stores with people that are a little more knowledgeable than HD or Lowes. you can get things faster and match colors better if you need to.

What I hate most in the process is the pre-paint prep. That can take longer than the painting and it is inevitable that you will still get paint where you didn't want it.

Good luck. When you find you are arguing about shades of white you have gone too far.

Just called my local Sherwin Williams store and confirmed you are correct. Hard to pass on that deal so probably the way we will go.
Yeah my wife is always painting something so she always knows when it’s on sale.

We’ve owned 4 houses and have painted each one inside and out (current one only inside so far). I hate it but it is satisfying when done. Made us some good money upon resale too.

I bought a Graco to paint our house. I will look to see what model it is. It is not the low end but its not the high end. They do a good job rating them for the amount of paint you are going to run through them. After I was done with it I donated it to my work. We continue to use it to spray all sorts of stuff.

If you get a sprayer, find a piece of wall, or a sheet of ply wood, and practice. It does take a minute to get the rhythm down. When you get good with a sprayer you will very much lessen the amount of painters tape that you need to apply and the time it takes. I use a piece of cardboard or a piece of corrugated plastic like they use for signs, placing it where I dont want the paint to be and paint away. No cutting in, no taping. If you are painting your ceilings too, (if you werent planning on it, you will want to after you are done with the walls) or for the outside trim where you cannot paint the whole trim from one position of the ladder set up step ladders with 2x12s run between them for a pick plank.
