Out of the mainstream hunting calibers

Glad I’m not the only one that it bothered
:)

And chance you know how to make one shoot? Mine is in great shape, but I just don't know how to load for these things. I've got a heavy bullet in the 210 gr range, cast hard and it is alleged to be a copy of the original Krag bullet, whatever that means. Cast from Lyman #2. Erratic though.

Always open to suggestions.

Lovely stock on that trapdoor KJ. Unfortunately, I don’t bring much knowledge to the table on these. One question...is it a 1 in 10” twist?

I don't know the twist, but the barrel is original, if you know what they were fitted with originally. It is an 1898 model.

I have talked to MLV or whatever. HE recommended the bullet and 5744. I have not slugged it, but I could. It does not feel bad when I run a tight jag. It looks spotless. I haven't scoped it, but I could/should.

I have a couple first model Newton rifles that I hunt with regularly. One is chambered in 30 Newton and the other is a 256 Newton. I load 200gr partitions in the 30 and it is my favorite elk rifle. The 256 shoots the 140 gr partitions really well and. I have killed everything from coyotes to elk with it. Still hoping for a wolf. 😎

257 Ackley Improved

My grandfathers gun he gave to me. Worked wonders on Antelope this past season and brought some emotion because he always wanted to take it out west but never had the chance after he built it.

Current oddballs:

7mm Mauser Ackley Improved.
35 Whelen
9.3x74R
8x57JR
450 3 1/4 BPE

I like oddball cartridges. Would love to add a 348 WCF in a M71 Winchester, 40-65 Model 86 Win and a plain jane 45-70 in a single shot - probably a Ruger, but a Shiloh Sharps carbine would be nice.

Before Michigan allowed limited straightwall rifle in what was once the shotgun zone my dad had a custom .410 built. He still uses it.

.410 plastic hulls, .416 bullets. Talked him into switching to cutting edge 180 grainers this year and picked up 300-400 fps. He found some Russian steel .410 cases we plan to mess around with next spring.

4 pages and only Ben Lamb mentioned the 348 Win, but doesn't have one and nobody likes the 275 H & H I am not just in the minority, but alone

a lot of very interesting calibers, to be honest some I know nothing about

The 275 H&H Is such a UK cartridge that I don't think many people even know what it is. That spot in the line up largely goes to the 7mm RM or the .280 Remington in the US. The big cartridge in the H&H magnum line never really caught on in the lower 48 outside of the 30 super & the 375 for the African bound & wealthy.

I have a long list of oddballs that if I come across I’d probably buy but for now the only non-mainstream caliber I hunt with is my .338-06 and even that is marginally mainstream since it was chambered one factory rifles and ammunition is/was commercially produced. I really do love these posts as it’s fun to hear about the oddballs

I'm not wealthy enough to be africa bound. I have a 375 H&H. It's actually not unpleasant to shoot, once or twice.

the .375 H&H has a very good (but little known) reputation for being an excellent breech seated or blackpowder gun with cast bullets. Not heavy recoil either. If you want to shoot it a bunch, you might look into it.
