NRA response the US Public Land Sale

I'm not surprised NRA isn't taking a stance on public land sales. I wish they would, but their stated purpose and virtually singular focus is 2A stuff.

I've been largely disappointed in recent years with the NRA, but it is a powerful organization for the protection of the 2nd Amendment. It largely stays out of other stuff and maintains that focus. There are other great 2A organizations, but in reality, they have a tiny fraction of the influence the NRA does.

Has BHA come out with an official public position on removing SBR, SBS, AOW and silencers from the NFA? I know they support silencer use, but I doubt they will come out in vocal support of the others. I'd like to see congress open the machine gun registry that closed in 1986, or remove them all together from NFA. I don't think it would be fair for me to judge BHA or RMEF or NWTF if they don't come out in support of full autos, SBR, SBS and AOW because their purpose is public land, elk, and turkeys, respectively.

Actually, they stated that they are monitoring and waiting for a "final version".

The proposal by Senator Lee to sell off these public lands was included in the Reconciliation Bill, or as you may know it, the “Big Beautiful Bill.” As of last night, that proposal was sent to the Parliamentarian who rejected it. Senator Lee resubmitted the land sale proposal today, in a much more narrow scope. When I asked Federal Affairs for our NRA position, their response was that we are monitoring it. As hunting is one of our key areas of interest, per our charter, we have a keen interest in this issue, but we cannot have a position until there is a final version. It is highly likely that this proposal will not make it into the final reconciliation bill. Your NRA Federal Affairs team is monitoring any and all developments concerning this proposal, but any NRA support or opposition will be contingent on the actual language of the final proposal. I hope this explanation is helpful."

Being from western Washington we can shoot firearms on state land but more and more of it is being shut down to shooting due to reckless target shooters that leave their trash and do not adhere to the basic firearm safety rules and/or proximity to populated areas. I could see the state shutting down all shooting on state land within the next 10 years. So... the NRA better start supporting public (federal) land. No place to shoot = no shooters = no NRA. I understand you can go to a gun range, but I have also seen open air rifle ranges shut down in western Washington because of the encroachment of civilization and NIMBAs (Not In My Backyard) types. Which leaves indoor ranges which often do not allow large caliber rifles (anything above 5.56) and rarely have more than 25 yards of range. Washington has banned many semi-autos and I have no doubt they intend to stop there which is the demographic that shoots at indoor ranges. So, again, no shooters = no NRA. Hopefully they prioritize public lands before it's too late. And hopefully, trash shooters get a clue and stop being knuckleheads.

As a fellow Washitonian you’re so right. I’m frustrated with politics and the trash shooters. I used to frequent Fish Trap West of Cheney, but I got sick of the garbage. Oh, and a dude almost shot my ass… He didn’t understand why I was pissed. He had a set up his target on a very slight angle to the usual range, slightly pointing away from me.

I called for a cold range when he was reloading. As I was walking to my target I heard his action cycle and when I turned he had raised his AR. I yelled at him and he lowered the barrel. He was confused and told me I wasn’t actually down range. I unleashed some course language about the risk of reflections and what appeared to be his lack of knowledge and skill.

Unpopular Opinion:
If you're disappointed by the NRA being spineless, feckless, and useless PoS's on matters other than protecting the personal ownership of M2 Bradley Fighting vehicles, you haven't been paying attention. They haven't given a shit about Hunting, Conservation, or Education in more than 30 years.

The criticism of the NRA in this thread is completely fair, they have definitely made their fair share of mistakes. However, the reality is we are gonna need every partner and organization we can muster to ensure Americans continue to enjoy the right to firearm ownership in the future, particularly in blue states. The Mike Bloombergs, David Hoggs, Everytowns, Giffords, Busses, etc have amassed a tremendous amount of political and financial power, with an incredible war chest. No amount of “common sense” gun control is gonna suffice, they will not stop until firearms ownership is a relic of America’s past.

Really? A decade or so ago this was completely not the case between their lobbyists and NRA-ILA. They were actively speaking plublivly against all kinds of things around LGBT and pro-life issues on cable news channels frequently. To the point I stopped paying attention to what they did. Has this changed?

Edit: Interstingly it seemed like Sierra Club, NRDC, etc started doing similar things in the same timeframe.

That has always felt like part of the major impetus for GOA.

Very true statement. Enemy of my enemy and all of that. However, for my limited finances, I'll choose to financially support other institutions. But I totally agree with you, I shouldn't start a trash talk campaign or anything. Sometimes you just need to know the limitations of things and work within the margins. NRA still supports 2nd amendment rights. That's a pro.
