At that point I would just buy a .308. Cutting down a 300 past 24" makes it a hard kicking 30-06, and cutting it down to what this does would make it into a hard kicking, barrel burning, .308. If a short barrel and performance are what you're after, you need more powder. A .308, .30-06, and .300 win are not all the same at the same barrel length. A .300 win most definitely has a shorter barrel life that a .308 but good luck finding an average hunter that has actually shot one out. Barrel life shouldn't be on a hunters list of concerns.

I figured you would have learned your lesson after you bought into the 7 PRC. I can maybe, heavy on the maybe, see the appeal for someone that doesn't reload and wants to buy a rifle off the shelf but I most definitely wouldn't be an early adopter. Rumors are that it struggles in the accuracy department and you can't reload the cases. And when you break down all the ballistics, there isn't that much difference between a lot of these cartridges. For a guy that hunts 4-500 yards and in, none of this matters.

I'd certainly consider a 7mm BC with a 16" barrel that performs like a 7 rem mag with a 24" barrel to be a pretty significant difference. I'm a late adopter to suppressors (mainly because I shoot a lights out 7 rem mag that's already 24" long), but this may change my mind as I can have one on and get similar performance to my 7 rem mag and probably be under the overall length of my current gun.

And the accuracy rumor is just that...a rumor. No way gun manufacturers would jump on board at the rate they are if they weren't able to produce sub 1 MOA guns. No one would buy it if that's true and there is tons of money and years of R&D behind this product.

I listened to a video from the director at federal on this round. Really good listen (I think). Says they're able to reload them and are getting 5-8 reloads before they start running into issues with the case cracking.

I get being skeptical and not being an early adopter. I'm curious to see how it all plays out. But some of the stuff that people are saying about it is just plain wrong. I think there's a lot of hornady/PRC people out there spreading misinformation.

For instance, my comments above about weight were wrong. This alloy is actually lighter than brass and was a development effort that started for military applications.

When I was looking at the 7prc the thing that turned me off was all the pressure issues people were having. I was also reading about issues with the round not seating cause carbon build up at the lands. Last thing I want is a gun that is prone to malfunctioning if it gets dirty. I'm curious to see how this round performs from that regard.

I'm also a 7mm fan. The recoil to effectiveness curve is way nicer than any thirty cal rifle I've shot. Just my personal opinion, so maybe that's why I'm such a fan boy.

It's no doubt a difference but I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze. I think the innovation is cool but for the guy that's hunting 4-5-600 and in, I don't think it offers any real world gain. Chop a 7 PRC, 7 rem mag back to 18-20" and go kill anything you want in NA. I may change my tune in a couple years as more equipment and information comes out but right now, this doesn't interest me in the slightest

Yeah, as much as this stuff interests me, if I'm honest with myself...I'll probably be shooting my old reliable 7 rem mag for the next couple decades.

PS: I bought into the hype with a 7mm SAUM years ago...now, I don't regret it but I'm 1000% sure I never saw the velocities that were promised. In fact, the Remington 160gr. Factory load is so hot it locks the bolt for 5 seconds after the shot. IIRC, that load delivered 2960 fps in a 22" barrel and it was hot as blazes! My best reloads delivered around 2830 fps with a 160...

Anyway. I don't see myself running out to purchase a Backcountry anytime soon.

Right. I didn't say that. I said if I chopped my 300 win mag down below 24 inches then it no longer performs like a 300 win mag and just burns more powder and kicks harder to get 30-06 performance, and if I chopped it all the way down to get it more suppressor ready then I would be burning more powder and having a harder kicking gun that would just get me .308 performance; so at that point I should just buy a .308 if I just want .308 performance. But that's not what I want.

The magical gun that everyone seems to want right now is a carbon fiber everything 7mm shooting a .7 BC 190 grain copper bullet at 3000 FPS out of a 5.5 lb gun with a 18 inch barrel, a suppressor, produces 12 ft lbs of felt recoil, holds 9 rounds, and shoots 5 round groups at .5 MOA. Nobody has cracked the code to create that particular unicorn.

But I'm gonna celebrate innovation that moves in that direction, for sure.
