Hi all. Next year a mate and myself are planning on doing an OE around the US and are both keen hunter. We are 21 both fit and able hunters. We would be interested in trying to hunt elk in the rut. We would be willing to swap a hunt in New Zealand for Red stags,Fallow deer, Chamois or Tahr if you were come to New Zealand, for anyone who would be able to take us out and get us onto some elk.I’ve done a little bit of research on how your systems work but would appreciate any info on which state would suit us best! Thanks in advance

Most elk hunts are by lottery draw. The better the unit the harder to draw. Colorado has some over the counter tags.

First, welcome to the site and cheers for bringing some pics on your first post. The first question I would ask is what is your weapon of choice? That will determine how and where you have the possibility of hunting elk in the rut. Also, how much equipment will you be bringing with you?

I hunt mostly with a rifle but getting more and more into bow hunting. By the looks bow hunting season is the majority of the rut? Most basic essentials but would be fine with buying any gear needed over there.

Those are some cracker stags. DOC land ?
These are private land only 10 minutes from DOC land! These are some South Island public land stags

The OTC units in CO for rifle would NOT get you into the rut. Montana and Wyoming would be your best shot but would require a draw. For gear reference, I usually hunt 2nd Season here in CO (3rd or 4th week of OCT) and I have seen weather from 65F to -10F in the same week. I know bringing much weight may be prohibitive so it is something to consider.

I could get you a late season cow elk pretty easily, haha. Cool pics man, I would love to hunt NZ someday.

How are your plans going tlenny?

I’ve got myself an Idaho deer tag so planning on heading over in Oct this year.

Let me know if i can help with tags or logistics.

Welcome to the Forum! I've wanted to do a stag hunt for years, since visiting NZ in the early 2000s. I hope you find what you are looking for here!

I would recommend a gohunt.com membership which will be great for e-scouting, mapping, and filtering out areas that don't have what you need. Next would be choose weapon for sure, bow or rifle. I would say most areas in the rockies are going to experience peak rut sometime in mid to late september. Randy and Corey normally say the 7 days after the fall equinox are a good starting point and then take moon phase and weather into account to fine tune the prediction. It's definitely an educated guess at the end of the day though. Over the counter hunts are the easiest logistically because you can plan well in advance but draw units with high draw odds for people with no preference points is another good option. I would go through everything in the elk101 course, then look at what elknut and joel turner have to say about calling sequences. Randy Newberg has some great e-scouting videos and Mark Livesay takes e-scouting to a masterclass level depending on how much you want to geek out. Good Luck!

You might look into getting a Wyoming general tag, depending on unit, you could hunt with ether bow or rifle. Which island are you from? My wife is from the Waikato district.

I'd be interested in that swap. You would need a bow to get a guaranteed draw here and hunt in the rut.

They disappeared 4 months ago.

If they resurface, contact @Kiwi. He's your neighbor.
I guess once they found out you can't just go out and hunt elk like they do stags in NZ for free they were no longer interested.

Can you hunt for free in New Zealand?

Cook National Park. New Zealand is an incredible hunting destination: spectacular mountain scenery, endless public land and a pantheon of exotic species to hunt all without tags, licenses, trophy fees or the necessity of hiring a guide

Yes, all free and really no restrictions at all. That’s true for all big game including 7 species of deer, tahr, chamois, pigs etc.

Hunting in National Parks is encouraged :)

Just be careful how things are phrased.

Taking a buddy hunting and him later taking you hunting is legal.

A formal quid pro quo can easily be considered illegal outfitting and in some states is a felony.
