Nevada - Is it Worth it?

I don't recall you reaching out to help me with that legislation either. Probably before your time? You make yourself look real stupid to anyone who takes the time to search the MM archives. The reporter's name was Crystal Cruz, who went on to take a news anchor job at KCBS Los Angeles. I got dozens of phone calls from hunters in Arizona the following day, none of whom I knew. Along with letters of thanks from many AZ legislators who I had emailed educating them of what that bill entailed. All while you sat on your hands doing absolutely nothing. But subsequently happy to apply for those saved tags. Kind of the definition of a "taker".

NV offers some of the best quality limited draw hunt options for multiple species in the West. Unfortunately, nonres hunters have figured that out and draw odds continue to drop every year even with their bonus pt system. There are a lot more hunters starting off applying than the handful of tags issued for a unit every year.

I faithfully applied for every species available to nonres in NV for around 20 years. I decided to ditch NV, it was getting too expensive applying in several states and I'd rather put that $ towards an Alaska or other trip that is guaranteed rather than tossing $ to the wind. If NV was a closer drive I would likely still apply, but it's a heck of a long ride to scout....and hunt. If I had $ to burn I would still apply but I quit! I went on 1 great antelope hunt in 20ish years of applying and draw odds stink!

Now that I was able to unload 28 pronghorn points, I’ll be following your move shortly. Just need to spend 19 deer points which may have some value. The rest have miniscule odds I’ll walk from. Either spend that coin in Idaho or just drop one state.

I apply in NV and will continue to do so.

For me, it's not just about what tags I can draw, but to show support for a State that I feel manages very well considering the challenges of the arid climate. Big-game is always going to be a limited resource there due to the quality of the habitat, lack of moisture, invasives, et. Plus, NV is one of the brighter spots for desert sheep and really quality hunting for all species if you can draw. I'll pay the price to hopefully have a great hunt if I do draw. If I don't, fine with that too.

I appreciate that enough to just continue supporting that effort even if it means very few, or even any tags for me personally. Hunters trumpet on all the time about what great "conservationists" they are, then cry alligator tears every single time they have to shake the dust out of their wallets. Cheap skates and crybabies that really don't care about anything but what they can take from the resource.

Back when I started applying in Nevada it was one of the most expensive states to apply in. So much so I had to apply every other year for a few cycles. It is middle of the road now. Seeing new places and hunting different animals and ecosystems is important to me. I put in for most animals because I’m going after a sheep tag so I might as well gather the points and hunt other cool places along the way. I’ve come to the realization I’ll be putting in everywhere but CA, OR, and WA mainly to support the cause until I can’t hike the hills. Just need to work on using up all those gathered points; that is not easy to do in Nevada but I am going to try starting with pronghorn in a couple months.

I just reviewed several different hunt point statistics for the Nevada 2024 and 2025 draws. I don’t think the final draw numbers are published yet for last week’s 2026 draw.

Every tag for any species in Nevada is a “win”. I am very blessed, thankful and grateful to have drawn a NR rifle antelope tag with mid-tier points after looking at several draw charts. Without saying, odds are long and tough in Nevada even with near maximum points for both residents and nonresidents.

I still think Nevada and Utah are worth the time, money, and effort, although nothing is getting easier to draw or hunt.
