BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP was all I heard on the morning of October 1st. "4:45 already??" was my first thought. I got up, got all of my stuff together and was ready to leave by 5:00. We got in the pickup and drove probably 30 miles from Salmon to the little road where we had seen the big bull that we had named "6-pack". We named him this because my dad and I both wanted him and didn't want to share. He was a big 6x6 that we estimated to score 370+. We did our usual walk that took 45 minutes to get to. By this time it was about 30 minutes until it got light. In the faint distance you could sometimes hear 6-pack bugling. We glassed and glassed for any sign of him until about 2:30 P.M. We started heading back to the pickup when we saw a deer just laying under a lone tree staring down the hill towards the little creek that trickled down there. A quick look through the binoculars showed he was a nice little 4x3 about 20" wide. Too bad deer season didn't open until October 5th.

The next few days the weather changed and it wasn't in our favor. We kept looking for 6-pack but we couldn't find him or hear him again. We started glassing when we noticed there was a road that lead probably about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile to where he had been. Fearing the worst we found out where that road was and were glad to see there was a gate up making it impossible to pass. Or so we thought, two assholes from a different part of Idaho had parked there pickup at the little clearing next to the gate and drove their ATV's around the it. We were pissed!!

It was now October 3rd. (Third day Kraven) We were heading out to a new spot where we had heard there was a few elk and we got set up and looked through the binoculars and instantly found a lone elk. "It's a bull" was my dads exact words. I looked at my watch and discovered I only had about 4 hours to get to him and kill him before it got dark. I didn't want my dad or uncle to go because I didn't want the bull to get spooked. I snuck to a little over 300 yards and the bull was still feeding and was unaware of my presence. He was across the draw from me and I put my crosshairs right behind his front shoulder and took a deep breath and squeeeeeeeeeeeezed the trigger. The bull just looked around like nothing had happened and walked into the trees. I thought there was no way I could have missed him. I spent the next hour and a half going down hill then up the hill he was on looking for him. Finally there about 100 yards off I saw this big fugging animal hunched over with that look that some people get when they get off of a roller coaster, that "I don't feel so good" look. I didn't want him to take off so I raised my rifle and one shot to the neck and he dropped. I yelled out to my dad that I got him and him and my uncle got there about 30 minutes before it got dark. We quickly gutted him, skinned him and opened him up so he wouldn't rot. It was hard leaving him over night but we had to do it because we didn't have flash lights (yes I know that is very stupid). We got up there the next morning and found nothing had happened to him. We looked and saw an ATV trail about 1/4 of a mile from where my bull dropped. Since it was up hill we cut his head off and cut him in half and drug him that way. My dad spent about two hours trying to find out how to get the ATV to that road and finally he was there. We got only one half out each trip but we got him out. We were done about 12:30 or so. And I was done hunting.

The next day we took off because we felt it would be a good time to get some things done around the house.

The following day was opening day of deer season and my uncle was proud because he could finally hunt. He has never killed a muley and said this was going to be his year. We were looking through the binoculars when my dad and I found a nice little buck. After setting up the spotting scope we realized he was a 4x4 about 18" wide. My uncle decided to go after him. We asked if he wanted us to go with him and he said sure. We snuck to within about 500 yards and the buck was gone!! We kept glassing and found him feeding down in the sage brush. We crept on our hands and knees and got to about 350 yards when my uncle spotted him. I looked through my binoculars and spotted the buck standing there looking the other way. My uncle pulled up and all I heard was BOOM. All I smelled was burnt gunpowder and all I could see was that buck drop like a rock. We got up to him and my uncle was very pleased with it even though he only got to hunt for a total of about 4 hours in the two weeks we were there.

The next week went by with little activity and we just ran out of time for my dad to get a bull. Even though he didn't get one my dad said this is the best trip he has ever been on and I totally agree with him. I don't know when there will be pictures but it should probably around the middle of the week.

I'll have pictures around the middle of the week DGF. There was no field pictures which kind of sucks. My dad forgot to grab the camera when he got the ATV so we had to weight until after we had already got half back to the pickup. But I will post the ones I have when I get them developed.

I was hoping no one was going to ask if I was wearing the hat because I knew they wouldn't believe what I did. We were getting ready to leave and I was just walkin out the door when I remembered that I left it in my room. I ran over, grabbed the hat and took off. Well I got to Idaho and opened up my suit case and laying there was a fugging camo hat from Winners casino in Winnemucca, so I didn't have a pic with my HT.com hat on. :( But I got an elk, so I'm happy. :D :D

Great story TK. Too bad about the hat though. It would have been a nice addition to the great story you posted. But you had a good trip and a good hunt and that is what really counts. Welcome back and am looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Calif. he's a 5x4 if you count the browtine and the other point that he snapped off so that they are only about an ince long. If you don't count them he's a 4x3. I agree, they are all trophies in my book too!! :D :D
