Any advice from the locals? I'll be moving up in march for a new job. Hows the community, hunting, fishing, ect. If anyone knows or has suggestions of a good place to rent for a bit id be all ears.

Never lived there but have known people from there and surrounding area. Smaller town fairly tight knit. Fairly high percentage catholic. Some good people there. Most people drive to Lewiston for their big grocery purchases.

The general area is predominately agriculture. Quite a bit of private ground. If your courteous and ask the right people I’m sure you can get access. It’s not far to access good public land areas.

Lewis Clark wildlife Club is a rifle range not too far. They have benches and can shoot out to 500 yards. Also a couple Trap Shooting clubs near there.

It’s a great place for a guy that wants to be outside. Mountains to hells canyon country. You’re surround by all kinds of hunting and fishing. Literally year round stuff to do. Steeelhead, chukars, whitetail, mule deer, elk, upland birds, pretty much everything is within an hour or two. If you can make a living there and don’t need big city life, you can make it great. Congrats

The town itself isn’t much so you will have to drive an hour and a halfish to Lewiston to do any real shopping. But, The Depot Food and Fuel used to have a really good burger and fry special and, like @44hunter45 and @Elktrack said, you are so close to so many really neat places. If you could buddy up with some local farmers, I bet the coyote hunting would be good.

As others have said cool area, limited services for lots of creature comforts. People are an interesting mix of salt of the earth people and total dirtbag criminals allowed to get away with it because they’re locals. Decent amount of people have moved there in the last few years due to lack of building codes from the county.

Were you sentenced there, or did you volunteer? Actually, it's a great central location for outdoor pursuits, but that's about it. This is a town of about ~3500 people, and ~18K people in the ENTIRE County (Idaho County is Idaho's largest geographic county)
But McCall is a little more than an hour away for a cool Mountain Ski/Lake Town. Lewiston is 1.5 hours away (Costco), and Spokane is only 3 hours away.

Colorado isn't in the top 10 of hated plates, but I'd certainly try to get new licence plates before I moved into town...

Funny you mention that. I looked at a flipper house in Gville last year and decided it needed to be burned down. I saw the Zillow ad and got to thinking about how cool a 2nd story deck would be to drink coffee and enjoy the views. IRL it ended up being a POS money pit. Beware of wet basement issues on the north side. City storm runoff management is non-existent to the north of Hwy 13.

There is something really special about the views on the Camas Prairie. 360° mountains and prairie. I look for the Seven Devils every time I come down Hwy 95 south.

Almost all the nicer homes are south of the main drag, affordable north.

Lot's of old families in the area. Germans and Scandinavians.

Idaho Forest Group runs the Guy Bennett Mill in town. USFS NP/Clearweater used to be a big presence in town, but the SO is now moved to Kamiah.

As others have said Lewis and Clark Wildlife Club in Lapwai is not a bad shooting range. An organized range with 500 gongs. I'm keep a membership even though it is a little hard for me to get there after work. Much closer for Gville.

Decent pizza place and Mexican place, decent sporting goods store. Still has a drive in theater.

40 years ago I fell in love with the girl working at the Maverick Store. The relationship played out in my head while driving down to my sister's in Kooskia. It wasn't meant to last.

Definitely. Even better if you get the Idaho Gasden Flag special plate! "MAGA" and "TRUMP" vanity plates are probably taken already. Remove all Biden/Harris stickers if you have them. Replace them with "Smoke a Pack a day" sticker and you will be OK. If you drive a Subaru, go straight to Gortsema's and get a good 'Murican truck. (Kind of kidding on that one)

Helpful hints:
The river towns are pronounced "Kam-ee-ai" and "Koosky". Nothing says newb like getting them wrong. Oh - the town on the way to Lewiston is pronounced "LapWAY". It is the Nez Perce Tribal headquarters. A little sensitivity goes a long way.

Mount Idaho is where a lot of the baddies @TheTone talked about live. Just keep driving.

Everyone is related to everyone. Don't trash talk.

44-45 pretty much nailed it. My Ex wife of 20 years moved back to her family's place therea coouple years ago. You can get to a lot of remote country from there. Drive to Pittsburg Landing West of White Bird to access the Snake River. Watch the Jetboat races in Riggins in the Spring. Drive through Kamiah, Kooskia and Syringa to to hit the Selway and Lochsa Rivers. In the 80's the Selway Bitterroot was the Elk Factory of Idaho. It has declined since then. I think you can get two bear tags a year there now...

There is a lot of outdoor recreation you can do if you can survive financially.

Lewiston is your nearest big town for doctors, Big Box stores and an airport that goes to Portland, Spokane and Seattle.

This brings up a good point. As a new resident trying to land gently, it's important to know, Northern Idaho does not exist. There are two Idahos, Southern and NORTH. IYKYK, and anyone who refers to it as Northern is immediately marked as a non-local. Now, where the dividing line between North and Southern Idaho is, is a matter of some debate. Could be Moscow, some say the Clearwater River is the dividing line (I dare you to tell someone from Peck that because they are on the South Side of the River, that they are a Southern Idahoan...) I'd probably allow as far South as Whitebird Pass, but I've heard people argue North Idaho stretches as far south as Grangeville, and some, drunkenly, have tried to justify calling Riggins the southern terminus of North Idaho. YMMV

Spring: Turkeys, bears, rafting, steelhead
Summer: fishing, camping, rafting, huckleberries, scouting, sturgeon
Fall: EVERY huntable critter in Idaho is nearby except antelope.
Winter: steelhead, coyotes

You’ll be close to Clearwater, Lochsa, Selway, Salmon rivers. Epic rafting and great fishing. There’s mountains all around, canyon country, ag, every kind of terrain really. Snowmobiling and atv rides all over. It’s truly got a ton of opportunities.

Time zone bridge at Riggins is the line for sure. Everything starts to feel weird south of there

None of this is true. If you’re considering moving to Idaho all these things no longer exist

It was voluntary. Got an opportunity pursue a job I’ve been wanting to do for a bit. I’ll be coming with NM plates. I’m sure that’s not any better though.

This is why is I use the term "Snorth". Panhandlers get tetchy when us Palousers say we are in NORTH Idaho. You can try tacking on the "Central" word, but no one cares. 1L plates get hate whether you go upstate or down. An Idaho County plate is pretty much all access, I think.

Sibling squabbles. You have to BE Idaho before you can join that fight.

Try walking into a bar in Salmon wearing a Gavin Newsome hat. Nobody will care what time zone you're from
