Was awaken by the unmistakable sound of mischief abound... Looked out the window and was surprised to see a moose getting into the neighbors garbage. I walked up to the young bull and was curious to see what he was eating. Looks like the neighbors didn't like their Chinese food. The young bull LOVED it though. I also found it odd that he ate the styrofoam. The more and more I watched him he seemed to remind me of someone from this board. But for the life of me I can't recall who...

I remember sitting in a nursing home and listening to my great grandpa telling how bad the moose were when he was a little boy. he said that every night they would have to put their livestock in a stockade and bate the hooks. The hooks hung from trees and he said they would often wake up in the morning a find several dead moose hanging. he told of how herds of moose would pursue members of his family while they were riding on horseback. he told of how he wasn't allowed to play alone outside. When you look into it there are certianly problems between humans and moose. I'm surprised there aren't more accounts of moose killing people and defending moose is a hard position to try and defend.

I apologize if I have offended all of you "real hunters" out there but let me give an example. Around my families cabin in interior Alaska, there used to be some great trash dumps. My family would throw away 10 tons a year, because that is all we could ethically dispose, without any problem. In the beginning, you would consider yourself lucky to see a moose. Recently we observed a herd of greater than 25 animals. Oddly enough, the trash dumping has been on the decline. According to ADF&G research, an adult moose consumes the equivalent of 27 trash tons (TT) a year. Let's do the math: 25 moose x 27 TT= 175 tons of trash consumed per year by this herd alone. Let me repeat: 175 tons of trash ate by this single herd alone, per year. Based on talking to some other landowners in the area, who live there year round, they state that they have even seen a herd of moose larger than the one we saw. So yes, I do believe that moose need to be harvested.

Wyo- I was attempting to find a website with my facts on it, however, I have been unable to locate such a site. I heard that tidbit of info, 27 TT per moose, during a lecture I attended on moose. So far I have only been able to find documentation in one study that moose need 8.5 kg/moose/day - 19.9 kg/moose/day. Other studies suggest that it is even less, 2.5 kg/moose/day, and others go even higher. Per the internet studies, there is a direct correlation between herd size and kg/day. I found it interesting that as the herd size increased, so did the kg/moose/day. In one study, it seemed to suggest that as herds increase, they eat trah more just for the trash. I would like to know if that might be because of the teaching process with the calves. Anyway, here is some reading for you:

Shoulda put out that Mooses Drool and seen if the moose would drink that trash.

SSS is what I always say. Our ancestors eradicated moose for a reason. They are no more than garbage sharks. They don't eat all the trash they scatter around either. I think they scatter trash for sport. If something isn't done soon, our trash will be all gone. Most trash has moved closer to ranches to afford some protection from the ranchers. Now the ranchers are complaining that the trash is causing problems buy building up so close. Go to this web site for more info www.savetrash.com

I agree. I went to the dump the other day and I saw nothing but MOOSE tracks. S S S.

Nesto, when did you start driving vans?

Well my Uncle Rico has one so I figured why not?

...rattling empties?;)

A man has to protect his property....

Woke up this morning and went outside and there was ANOTHER moose in the adjacent neighbors yard. Unlike the neighbor across the street though, this one has moose proof garbage cans.

Two moose killed in the anchorage area after eating trash did not have rabies, the state Department of Health and Social Services reported today.

The two animals underwent tests at the Alaska State Virology Laboratory in Fairbanks that revealed no evidence of the virus, according to a press release from the department.
The two moose are believed to have been involved in the trash eating around the anchorage bowl. The moose were killed in a hunt that followed constant bitching and moaning. The state Department of Fish and Game has since called off hunting for additional moose.
The Health and Social Services department says the animals will be tested for additional diseases, including the distemper virus.

Hayduke, I'm thnkin' it's time you hired an agent...and a publisher, err...I mean Ernesto. ;)

You savage uneducated bunch of @#$#%!@%%$%@#$$@!@. Moose have just as much right to live as anyone. These beautiful animals were peacefully going about their business long before humans encroached on their territory. You should all be ashamed, you cretins!, you jello-brained vaccuous celled, sponge bellied, beer swilling baboons! (no wait sorry about the baboon part, they are a noble animal too.)

A poem, an ode to the glorious moose.-

A moose.... On the loose,
Seeking swill to devour,
Fading.....
Weaker by the hour.

The trash on which it depends.
Landowners now choose to defend
In moose proof cans
Shuttered by iron bands.

Persecution abounds on all sides.
Nowhere to turn for a free ride
So few who care, no one to call.
Not even Obama....
He's all wrapped up in his#$#%#$%#% health overhaul.

When men love trash more than moose,
Our children will know,
An exsistence devoid of meaning.
For the majestic moose will be only a memory,
A whisp on the wind, an old greybeard's tale
Of grunts once heard in a bog.

I stand alone in solidarity with the moose, you can too.

I like it. Funny, creative, obviously time and effort put forth. I give it an A+, keep up the strong work.

God I love hunt talk. Any other site this would have been a pissing match like no other by now.

Don't worry Wyo- :) I'm sure it will take a while until I'm discovered. Sigh... all that talent going to waste. I could be saving moose, instead I'm forced to build habitat encroachment structures in order to buy food to fill the bellies of my numerous offspring.

Does it ever strike some of you guys as funny that all the wolf lover, ultra greenie people who decry how an expanding human population is causing species extiction, never offer to take themselves out of the picture?
