Montana Mule Deer Mismanagement

Rep Hinkle is a born and raised Montanan. There are few things that make native Montanans more angry than people who move here and start acting like and telling us "they know best." It shows a deep ignorance and disrespect for who we are and what we believe. It's been a repeating loop our whole lives, from the influx of Hollywood types to this new wave of Bozeman area hunters and tech bros. That's what's truly the sad state of affairs.

That will never get anyone anywhere, and you can bet there will be even more resistance if you are going to be that boldly arrogant.

If you want to make changes to mule deer season in Montana, stop complaining about the past. It isn't coming back. Stop treating the locals like we don't know our own state. Stop telling us hunting is bad here because you have different expectations of what it should be. Stop attacking anyone who asks questions or wants to help but isn't as aware of this small but loud group on this forum that is so incredibly dissatisfied.

Work with Montanans. Show them that though they are content, things could be better. Reach across the aisle. Respect the hard working staff at FWP. Acknowledge that draught and disease are just as culpable in the issues with our mule deer herd. Make incremental changes driven by data. Join a conservation org and go do a fence pull and meet more people.

But don't come here and throw a hand grenade in how things have been and somehow expect Montanans to bow down and thank you.
I think at this point it's pretty tough for the locals to make a claim the move ins could do a worse job with Montana's wildlife management.

I think a lot of locals are ready for something other than the same old shit.

So when do I get considered a Montana? I’ve lived here my entire adult life? I sure didn’t set out to change things when I moved
here. Where I grew up the hunting has gone to absolute shit I’d really prefer to not see it happen to another state. I’m far from talking about the good ol days I’d just like to see the clock rewound about 10 years
You and every other transplant ehh?

And I actually think you’ve been doing a good job of it Chris. You care and are working to make a difference, don’t get bogged down by whining, and I can certainly say from personal experience you’re doing your part to reach across the aisle. My post was largely for rhetorical affect, as many of them are. The latter half is what I hope you take from it: Montanans are proud, and like most people, do not appreciate being treated as inferior.

I don’t hate the group’s proposal, and am looking forward to the next iteration.

I had multiple responses typed out. Then Jesus said..IMG_7265.gif

You’d think if everybody is so satisfied with the mule deer hunting they would leave the comments on, on their Facebook post promoting the upcoming meetings. That was going to be my entertainment tonight. Disappointed once again.

Wow, missed a few days of this banter board.

So I'm a 5th Generation Montanan, and my Grandson is 7th. Doesn't mean much anymore as the numbers of "Transplants" have watered us down to small trickles.

I know you've all heard this (on this forum alone) some thousand times, but until you show up at the meetings, write your commissioners, representatives, The Fish & Game Director, and the Governor, repeatedly, in mass going viral at all costs, your not going to get much done.

Change at the state level is possible, but it takes villagers all over the state. A group of guys that decided they've had enough, is a great grassroots start, but joining in and helping push goes a long ways in getting things like this through.

Boy, I bet it's been over 25 years ago now that we were able to go LE in the Root for mule deer. The coveted 270-50 tags been brought up and I played a roll in getting that accomplished. HD 261-50 and now HD250-50 has been added. I don't think we'd have a chance at it today because there's such a divide amongst us, and the leadership in Helena has not shown us that they care much for grass roots efforts unless it's to slap them on the back for the great job their doing.

I joined this group of sportsmen here from Ht to help in any way I could to promote, or add to their proposal. The hard work they selfishly put out together to come up with a document that's sensitive to so many users . They have truly put in the hours on this.

You can create change if there's enough will and people have had it. BUT, you have to get off the computer, make the calls, join the clubs, and raise hell over this poor status quo.

This proposal these guys came up with has merit to look at. All I'm saying is look at it, read it, digest the whole thing and put yourself out there in this season structure imagining it's potential, or lack thereof. The give your .02 cents worth.

Stay engaged, don't give up. Sometimes your just pushing that Aircraft carrier with a rubber raft. It can happen.

Own it. The problem with mule deer hunting sucking now is not Hollywood transplants. It’s you, politicians like Hinkle, and the masses of those who are so content with crusty dog shit.

Born and raised here. Sucks knowing that my daughters won’t be able to experience Montana mule deer hunting like I did. But hey opportunity right

This is a bad look, You are starting to sound like Hinkle. To make this a transplant vs generational resident thing is diversion. I first realized that the current season was unsustainable during the mid 90's. If suggesting change is a hand grenade now it was a nuclear attack back then.

The last few pages with drawings, pics, and discussion about antler size and/or associated genetics didnt do a bit of good for getting the proposal across. The easy button for critics is to say its all about antler size.

Why are you guys speaking their complaints into existence?

Pretty much. Also I’m pretty sure someone went camping in Yellowstone got drunk shot a grizzly in self defense. Woke up in the morning only to realize it was a fuggin giant black bear loaded it up and went home

Maybe you should post up the Whereas statements from HB-139 … if you’re wanting to talk about folks making it about antler size.

:) i missed the where as about antler size there i guess. By the way - Im glad youve come around to understanding killing more cow elk (unlimited b tags) isnt good on public. Hope you think that way the next session unlike last one. Didnt someone say they "just wanted to regulate cow elk like deer does" and we had an abundance of elk? If i recall correctly - it came from a senator not from where you referenced @BuzzH hunting.

Does and cows are critical to population numbers. Hb 139 does say that

To him and a lot of others, anything that isn't status quo and 12 weeks of beating on the resource is a "hand grenade".
