Montana Mule Deer Mismanagement

Anybody read this article about mandatory reporting? It talks about MT specifically.
I just read it and I’m sorry I did. Basically it is just a bunch of guys imparting their bias for or against something.
The quote below shows the problem, irrespective of the method of collection.

“…because many [respondents] had no idea what hunting district they hunted in. Some didn’t know the species of deer [white-tailed or mule deer] they killed,…l

I’d take Bruce’s comments as being a bit biased since he’s been opposed to mandatory reporting from the start. IMO, although I always got along well with him when he was our local biologist he is definitely “old school” and pretty locked in to how FWP does it as being the best way.

I fail to see how being mistaken with mandatory reporting is any different than being mistaken with phone sampling surveys? It’s not like the person taking the survey is going to have accurate information to be able to correct a mistake.

Haven't and won't go to the e-tag. Bet there are others like me that choose not to. mtmuley

Mandatory reporting via the FWP licensing app for those of us who use the E-tag is the “easy button” for us.

For those who prefer to stick with paper tags, logging into the FWP website to report harvest or complete a year end survey, or calling a FWP telephone number and having a technician take down the information would also work.

There can be different avenues of how the information is collected. There’s going to have to be a certain level of FWP engagement on determining what data is helpful, crafting surveys and questions and then compiling that data in a publicly transparent report that is also beneficial for FWP biologists to incorporate into their regional management recommendations.

Compared to the “wealth” of data currently being collected by the random tele surveys, I am convinced that with inputs from regional biologists a mandatory reporting survey could give much more robust data for them to make better informed decisions.

Yep. "Regional biologists". mtmuley

I’m sure the phone survey was state of the art in 1995. But it isn’t 1995 anymore. It should be embarrassing to argue that the caller has to somehow coax the correct answer out of the hunter (which is impossible, even if it’s true that people can’t remember exactly). Almost every argument against the use of technology in collecting this data, be it government overreach, technology is too hard, or whatever else, should be seen as an embarrassment to the citizens of Montana.

An embarrassment? Really? Some folks choose not to live their life through "technology ". I'm a citizen of Montana. If an individual is hesitant or chooses not to use the "technology" I'm not embarrassed. The data needs to be collected. No argument there. mtmuley

I think you are taking it beyond what it is. It is simply collecting data. You either want bios to have the best data or not. Nothing here is requiring you to “live your life” through technology. And it is 2025. Technology is ubiquitous and certainly makes data collect cheaper and easier. You want your surgeon to say “I choose not to do my job through technology. We are just going to cut you open and let me fish around for a while and see what I find “

Thanks. You totally missed my point. But carry on. mtmuley

Some folks are going to prefer different levels of technology. Whether it’s paper tag tech, tele survey tech, or E-tag tech it’s all tech.

We’re on the same page with the belief that data needs to be collected and good management decisions need to be made with that data.

Method of collection is immaterial to me as long as we’re getting good enough data to make good decisions.

Truth be told, I don’t think the conversation between whether we need mandatory reporting or whether the tele surveys are adequate would even be a conversation we’d be having with FWP if mule deer weren’t struggling and if perceived quality of the hunting experience in terms of crowding and game quality and quantity were high. In my opinion if managers at FWP are still making the argument their survey methods are “good enough” they’re missing the main point that hunters aren’t satisfied with the status of how wildlife is currently being managed and the opportunity for access to that wildlife in hunting season.
