Montana General Season Structure Proposal 3.0

You guys were specifically discussing unit 410 and the impact of elk hunters on mule deer vs. antelope hunters on deer.

@Forkyfinder, in the years @ElJason was referring to when there was unlimited youth cow hunting through the general season and @ 1000 cow elk permits/licenses through the general season, how many antelope licenses were given out for unit 410?
Thats not the point.

The point is that incidental harvest (whether its b cow tags or antelope tags) will have an impact.

You are pretending it wont.

Not many. How many can hunt deer on opening day of antelope now?

There are. Surely the MTCSO could acknowledge the realities of having a deer tag during antelope opener that will have an effect? Couldnt you simply "fix" my whole issue by regulation - i.e. antelope permit holders may not hunt deer where their antelope permit is valid. I know why that wasnt on the table.

Why wasn’t that on the table? ^^^^

Bullshit. I addressed that earlier. Stop pretending that folks aren’t addressing your concerns. We’re not trying to save every single mule deer in MT. The impacts of incidental harvesting of mule deer from antelope hunters is going to be less than the impact of elk hunters harvesting mule deer when compared statewide.
Fact.

You do realize your arguing with someone who was a warden in 7 and someone who’s family homestead a ranch right? Out of curiosity how many days have you spent hunting public ground in that area. I’d bet my 6 year old has spent more time on public in that area during season than you. Arrogance and ignorance go hand in hand pretty sure I know were this lands. Since you seem to have such a great understanding of how these animals are moving across the landscape and reacting to pressure let’s see some
Of you grip and grins.

TLDR how many days have you spent hunting public in region 6 or 7and have you actually taken game Down there?

Try having deer seasons in Montana for mule deer Oct. 1-14, elk from Oct. 15-31 like Wyoming does.

Yes. Archery for both Sept 1-30. If Montana would do this and change nothing else, it would lead to a vast improvement. Could even make rifle deer 10/1-10/31.

Guys are making this way more complicated than it needs to be.

With all due respect, I just haven't found another person that points to THIS specific issue being anything but a nothingburger.

In fact, I think a rational person could make an argument that if you shifted the antelope opener right now to start during the general deer season, you would see a net decrease in the amount of deer harvested that weekend compared to any other year. Simply because people prioritize a Limited Entry permit over a general license. The reason there is high incidental harvest of deer during the general season is because everyone tries for an elk but they're harder to kill and a heck of a lot harder to get back to the pickup.

Odd - i heard it from a legislator and several people. Perhaps youre in an echo chamber.

Okay. Make me shut up about that specific point. I KNOW you have heard it from more than me.

You cant hunt mule deer where you have an antelope permit. Add it your proposal.... You wont - we're only left guessing why.

Dude, hunters in Montana have been able to do that for 50 years. And the other proposal floating out there doesn't get rid of the issue you've been preaching about either.

You honestly pretending its the same?
I've already said my opinion. If you shifted the antelope opener this season to November 1, 2025, you would see less mule deer bucks harvested over that weekend than were killed on November 1, 2024.
