I will be hunting in SW Montana on the Elk opener for 8 days. Looking at the forecast it looks like it could get up into the 40's or maybe 50's for those 8 days.

So would it be fair to say that our strategy would be to hunt early morning, glass during mid-day and then move around some more towards evening?

Thanks.

Opening week madness + warm temps does not equal mid-day glassing as a productive technique

I would post up and let the pressue push elk around or still hunt the timber.

Thanks for the good advice. We will do that.

Yeah, my advice would be to do your plan in reverse.

Find good vantage points where you can see lots of ground in the morning and evenings and hunt dark, shaded timber areas in the mid-day if you have an inclination to move.

Opening weekend madness sometimes dictates letting others move the elk to/for you.

Just my .02 but enjoy your time in Montana and good luck.

It should calm down after the weekend warrior clan gets back to work. And yeah, I'm one of those guys! :(

Magic hour will be your best bet...really anytime after 4 or 5 in the afternoon. That doesn't mean that there won't be elk out in the morning. I love the mornings and they are always productive for me regardless of the time of the season. If you're going to be out there all day though mid-day is going to be super slow so have a plan. Can you go out Friday, scout and maybe put a small group to bed for an early hunt Saturday morning? The elk will be out in force Friday evening and you can put a plan together to get on them EARLY Saturday morning. I missed that opportunity once outside Twin Bridges and lived to regret it!

Thanks for the advice guys. My buddy and I are leaving ND after my class tonight and will drive all night to get to our spot in MT. So hopefully we will be able to set up camp quickly and get some scouting in.

The best way to get your elk will be to go down and park your truck and hike into the woods. Find an elk and shoot it.................nothing to it;)

Especially if you head just south of Gardiner a ways, a place called mammoth. There are a few good bulls that don't even live in the woods, they live in town:)

Me, i'm just gonna go for a hike without a gun and see if i can watch someone else shoot one:)

Or go sight in my rifles, opening day of rifle is the best ever to be at the rifle range, NOBODY there:D And funny thing about that is two years ago, i went on opening day to the rifle range as i didn't have an elk tag or deer tag in my pocket, and there were about 15 elk right on the edge of the rifle range!! I got a chuckle out of it.
