I used my 5 points to draw first rifle. Last year same tag took 3 points to draw so I applied hoping point creep wouldn't get me. Soon to be 50 and never have killed an elk. I've been a part of 5 elk pack out/recoveries and 1 moose but none were mine. I've had 3 archery tags and got tag soup every time. So I loaded up wife and several of our children with camping gear and headed to Colorado for some family camping fun and to get eyes on the area. Sooo glad I did. I basically wasted two days trying to find exactly where I wanted to set up camp. A very generous dude gave me some waypoints to check out. We finally got camp set up and hung out at camp around 10,500 ft. Wife, kids, black lab, fishing, s'mores, campfire, tent, great times! Weather was great, maybe a bit cold at night. Got back in to Oklahoma last Friday temps were 107°.
Plan on going back 3 days before opener for more scouting. Taking my son and 15 year old nephew. Son turns 13 on opener. Hoping to get a nice bull come October!

Very cool trip! I'd love to do something similar with the family one year when the kids are just a bit older. Tried to pull a muzzleloader elk tag in CO this year but point creep got me. Sitting at 7 now and ready to get rid of them. With your son and nephew along it'll be a good trip no matter what but hopefully you'll get to put those young-ins to work packing.

Glad you made it out to see the area. As lucky as we are to have E scouting it never can replace seeing it in person. Plus you made a great family trip out of it.

I’ll be cheering for you to get your elk this year.

Awesome, first rifle is a great time to be in the woods and going a few days before opener is a great idea. Good luck and have fun!

Hopefully being there early will allow you to scout. Knowing where elk are before opening morning is a huge advantage.
