After 3 years of bear hunting a buddy of mine finally managed to fill his tag Sunday night. Long story short it took 4 of us 5 hours to get him off the mountain he was shot on. We started the hike into get him at about 8pm.(after an hour drive) It took us 45 min to get to where he shot him and about 3 hours to get him down. 312lbs dressed, 6'3" nose to tail. still waiting on his other measurements. F&G said it's one of the bigger blacks they have seen brought in from the area were he was shot. What do you guys think. I have one picture now with more to come along with the story. :hump:

That looks like a hell of a bear, especially for the guy's first.
Congrats, now go fill your own tag.

I am still waiting for more pics from one of the guys that help us drag him out. We did take him out whole and he is planning on having him mounted. So now for the story........
I was at home spending mothers day with my wife when I got the call to help him pack it out so this is from him. He had spent about 8 hours walking up and down ridges and glassing every meadow, creek, or green area he saw. About 5pm he decided to call it quits and head for the truck accepting defeat for the day. As he crossed a meadow that straddled a ridge he thought he heard some odd noise coming from the other side. Since he was only 20 yards from the tree line he decided to head into the trees and peak over the other side to see what it was. As he peaked his head over to his amazement he saw 2 bears playing/fighting/etc.(he couldn't decide what they were doing). He then got on his belly and crawled to the top to get a shot. However, the bears were not cooperating. Every time he got set to shoot one as they were both about the same size the would switch positions. Rather then risk a shot and shoot both who were only about 60 yards away he had an idea. The last time he was out in the area he saw lots of coyotes so he decided to bring his call this time to try to bag them if he never found a bear. He thought that if he whistled or made some human sound to try to separate them they would spook and he would miss his opportunity. So he grabbed his coyote call and blew. Instantly they both turned and charged his way. The bigger one out front. With only 30 yards between him and charging bears he shot at the lead bear........
Crap dinner is ready and 2 year old daughter pulling at my arm. More to come.........

....that was all it took was that one shot. Funny thing is he didn't even think on how in the heck he was going to get him out. That is when I got the phone call. He shot him about a mile from the truck, but lucky for us it would be a down hill trip. What a nightmare it was getting him out whole. Why he wanted to still baffles me:eek:. Going up to get him we had to climb through a rock slide that was about 400 yards wide and boy it was freaking steep. I've pulled elk out of some rough country but I think this topped it all. As soon as I get this pics I'll post them. What made it worse is that we did it in the dark.(we did have flashlights.)
