Plenty of hogs dropped in TX w/ 17hmr, right behind the ear. Hog skull is tougher than an elk skull.

0 total yards ran by the two elk I killed. 6.5CM

My next rifle is a .308. Why? Why not?

It is easier to kill an elk w/ a .22 mag than with a bow. Let that one sink in.

Smallest I’ve used is a 6mm creedmoor on a cow with a 105 Berger. 302 yards, took 4 steps and tipped right over. Killed my first 3 bulls with a 25-06 using 110 grain accubonds. I’ve killed a pile of them with a 28nos and 300rum also. Personally now days my primary elk gun is a 6.5prc with 156 Berger EOL’s. Has worked just fine on multiple mature bulls from 40 yards out to 700 yards.

I often hunt elk with bow and arrow. I’d be light years more deadly with a .223, light years.

I always find it interesting on how much time is spent discussing this topic when people kill elk all the time with stick and string. Hell, if the natives can kill a buffalo with a stick/string and a sharp rock while riding on a horse than anybody should be able to kill an elk with a modern firearm no matter what it is.

Folks gotta justify that rifle they own but dont want to shoot more than 10 times in a day somehow.

I've shot some with the 243 and 6mm. I don't know about 22 centerfires, but I know they would and do work.

Yeah same absolutely love the caliber! Actually just bought a barreled action the other day chambered in 300 RUM.

Seems like a a lot of us jumped on the 300rum bandwagon years ago…. I jumped off it when I got tired of carrying a 12.5 pound rifle with a 28in (with brake) barrel around in the mountains.. no doubt it’s Thor’s hammer with a 230 or 245 grain Berger… but I’m old and soft now. I like a lightweight, low recoiling, 20in barrel rig now days. Elk don’t seem to know the difference when a 140 to 156 grain bullet blows out their lungs vs a 230…

I'm 60. My elk rifle is still a .300 RUM. 25 years in. It doesn't weigh anywhere near 12.5 pounds. Don't shoot Bergers. No brake. mtmuley
