Just saw MI out of Doors posted a short on the NRC removing the southern gun restriction line.

Will be interesting to see the new regulations when they come out.

Glad this finally made it thru. No reason a rifle shouldn’t be used down here on some of these big farm fields. Especially since we are already stretching big bores out to 250-300 yards.

@Steelsearchin

CFR larger than .22. Good call. It has worked well here in IN.......NO increase in accidents or damage and I would wager that recoveries are up. OBR is a good thing too, although I do NOT get leaving out the UP. With the state of the herd up there? I think "earn a buck" would be a good move for the LP. get herd ratios better.

I'm all for the one buck rule. We need does harvested. Not barely legal bucks.
"...but if I leave the big bucks alone, and only kill the little ones, think of how big the big ones will be next year!!" 🤔 😉

Looks like i wont need to buy a 400 legend or a 41 great lakes, and I will have to go shopping for an adult sized .243 stock instead. My wife will fail to see how this is a net savings.

I’m going to come up there and ground pound grouse, just because I’m a weirdo now.

Lemme know when, I'll show you some heavily pounded GEMS. ;)

To be honest, I'm kind of tempted to get a 350 or 400 Legend for a suppressed set up. Or a 300 blackout. I had not heard of the 41 Great Lakes.

I think these are some great changes. I like the one buck rule because it allows people who really want to get a second buck to go hunt the upper peninsula. It seems like a great way to increase doe harvest down south while simultaneously bringing people back up over the bridge for deer camp again, hopefully.

I just hope you guys don’t do it like Minnesota did when we got rid of our shotgun zone. They let individual counties pass shotgun only ordinances and unfortunately a lot of county commissioner fuds opted to pass these ordinances.

I have a 350 suppressed with a rugged 9. It is such a nice combo for under 200 yards. It’s almost a perfect woods gun.

I may use my 260 Ackley for doe patrol on some of these big fields.

Except the wolves eat all the deer.

This was done polar opposite of how it should have been done. The UP herd has been hurting for a while. Here in Southern MI there are way too many deer. With two buck tags and 10 doe tags we still haven’t gotten the numbers down. Before the disease outbreak 2 years ago I had over 10 bucks a year in my little 1 acre patch behind my house nightly.

I don’t see this doing any real good besides increasing our car insurance and crop damage claims.

I grew up about 7 miles North of the "shotgun line". I can remember back in the early 80's sitting on the rifle side watching a group of guys on the shotgun side looking at a buck that was about 250 yards or so out. None of them wanted to take a shot so the just watched. The buck crossed the road and was promptly shot on the rifle side.

I don't know why so many people are upset about the OBR. Hell, when I started hunting deer in Michigan you only got one buck and you had to draw a doe permit. You couldn't even buy a second tag at that time. You saw deer in Gratiot county but nothing like what you see now.

I was picking up a rifle at the LGS down by Flint yesterday and he was planning on putting closeout prices on all his straight wall inventory today.

The numbers aren't going down because most people still weren't shooting does, at least not at the rates we needed. That's an oversimplification that doesn't take into account areas where we can't hunt of course, but I think it's broadly correct. These changes are meant to push people towards shooting more does in southern MI. Anecdotally, the vast majority of people I know in southern MI wouldn't shoot a doe until they filled their buck tags under the previous structure. If you want more than one deer, now you have to shoot a doe. That alone should push things in the right direction.

Do you think this reg change will have a meaningful impact on the UP deer herds? I really don't expect it to.
