That looks like a russula genus mushroom which both squirrels and elk love to eat. No doubt, the one in the tree was cached there by an elk. Probably a good place to wait and watch for the critter to return.

Its caused by a phenomenon called a gravity sink. They are very unpredictable and I've only come across them each time I've missed an easy shot while hunting.

Squirrels. Looks like a bolete. They are edible. The squirrels try to hide them from the shroomers.
