It has been a tough season this year for me, between not getting time to hunt and uncooperative birds. I got my first bird, a jake I posted on here, on the second day of the season. I had a second tag in my hand, with the hopes that I would get to start hunting some evenings the second two weeks of season.

In Ohio, you can only hunt til noon the first two weeks, and all day the last two weeks. Normally, I start seeing turkeys by the plant that I run, and where the land owner allows me to hunt, the last couple of weeks of season. This year I just wasn't seeing them. It is the only place I have been able to hunt because by the time I leave work and get to my other spots, it is too late. I can't hunt the mornings past about 7:30, so I was really in a pinch trying to find a bird to hunt for the last two weeks.

Well Friday morning, I finally saw a hen in the field by the plant. A few hours later, I had to run some errands and on my way back to the plant, I saw a gobbler in full strut a few hundred yards away. I knew it was a mature gobbler, but that was about it.

As it turns out, it was my weekend to work. Yesterday, I grabbed the gun and calls and just thought I would give it a try and see if I could close the deal by the time the morning readings had to be taken at the plant. I got set up where I saw the hen. Within minutes of setting up, I had a hen within 10 yards, and another further out in the field. I sat quietly awaiting the gobbler I was sure would follow. About a half hour passed without one showing so I decided to do a little calling. A gobbler immediately answered about 100 yards down over the bank. Unfortunately, he tried to come through the thickest stuff on the whole farm and got hung about about 30 yards behind a storm-downed tree, and briar patch. That ended that.

This morning, I sat up in the area that the gobbler was yesterday. I sat until about 7:00 without seeing or hearing anything. I finally decided to got through a small thicket that separates two fields. As I snuck up to the edge of the field, I noticed a hen about half way into the field, probably 150 yards out. I snuck around to the edge of the field where I knew she would pass through, just to see if she would drag a gobbler out of the brush. I had been there about a minute when i heard two gobbling down over the bank from me just about 30-40 yards. The next thing I know, there is a gobbler flying right over my head, and hitting the ground about 35 yards out, exactly where my gun was pointed. Needless to say, he didn't quite get his feet settled, and that was the last flight he will ever take! Sometimes luck is better than being good :D He was 17 lbs, 10 inch beard, and 1.25 inch spurs. A good mature gobbler that I am very glad to get! He'll be in the crock pot tomorrow with some veggies :)

One bird landing in the wrong place at the wrong time (for him) on the last day will definitely turn a tough season into a great one!
Congratulations on a great season!
