I’ve been out the last two mornings blue grouse hunting.

I hunt blues by being on the ridge at dawn and hunting the sage brush ridge tops. After a couple hours, the temp gets too hot to run dogs and the birds go back into the trees to slumber.

The birds are usually feeding on currants and grasshoppers. Getting into patches of currants with berries usually results in a few birds or a lot if you find a family group.

Blue grouse hunting is a good way to scout for elk and deer too. I bumped a 170” mule deer yesterday and found the summer home of bull elk today. I’ll be back to hunt both.

I’ve hunted these ridges enough years that it’s an old memory lane remembering points at different spots from long dead dogs. I realized my pup Dot is my 7th bird dog to hunt these ridges.

This year is an average bird number year. Work hard for a few opportunities. Good years I’ll kill a limit on each ridge.

Dot’s six months old and full of herself. I’m happy to see she’s a natural bird dog. She’s out searching, naturally recalls to the whistle and checks in with me. I shotgun broke her the last two days. She bumped two birds today which I thought was great. She’ll figure it out.

This is my first bird of the 2025-2026 season. I’m excited about the opportunities this year. I expect Dot to be a bird hunting machine by the time we end in February 2026.

Ellie is just shy of 7 months. She’ll chase just about anything with feathers, but today she got on a few wild gamebirds instead of meadowlarks and sparrows. Have a little toy snap gun that I popped a couple times when they flushed, like I normally do with the bumper training.

Did shotgun introduction last week using a bumper and a 20 gauge, didn’t seem to bother her one bit.

I think I’m going to chase those birds bright and early tomorrow, before it gets hot. Wish me luck!

This my one year old Griff, Banks. We've worked hard on getting prepared for his first hunting season. I can only hope to get him exposed to as many wild birds as possible, they'll be a better teacher than I can ever be.

Season starts tomorrow for us, first up on the list is Sharptail. I can't wait! Good luck to all!

Well, dang nice.
I have no dog and lean towards waterfowl, but ours opens tomorrow at 1/2 hour before sunup.
I plan to be in the field by then. It's a 2 and a half hour drive to where we plan to hunt. We will be truck camping (in the back of the truck) for a 3-day hunt. It's for sharptail and some doves. The weather so far looks good, other than hot, 90* most of the trip, but the wind will be under 20 mph. I hope to have some pics after that.

I was planning to spend a week September sharptail hunting this year. I’ve had the good luck to draw too many big game tags. I need the week as backup vacation time for elk hunting. If I kill my elk(s) quickly, I’ll use the time for midweek chukar hunts in November/December.

I drew a Coues tag this year which will really be a quail hunt. The first decent buck I see gets shot.

Having a few good tags is a good thing! Same boat, I drew a few really good tags. Turned in a solid deer tag due to dates running consecutively with elk. Had to pick one due to logistics. All early season (September), so we'll have a lot of time for birds.

Hope to hit all four species of grouse, pheasant, Chukar in Wyo. We've got trips planned for Kansas and Nebraska for birds throughout the season. We'll sneak in a few waterfowl hunts too.

My son and I are putting in for javelina down south in hopes of doubling that with quail. The lack of rain down there has me pondering to wait to make that trip till next year. We'll see.

Good luck on the coues! Bucket list hunt for sure.

Buddy joined me with his griffs. Lab puppy found just as many birds. Only mature bird was a hun my buddy got out of a bunch I whiffed on.

4 coveys, 9 birds. Good morning, and a great first hunt for my pup. Done before 10 due to heat.

Struggled mightily today. The young dog blew her wad early and was overheating before we even got into birds, so it was a short day for us. No water anywhere in the creek, which is a first. The other two folks did better but bird numbers were much lower than what we usually see, which was confirmed by the neighboring landowner who stopped to chat. Said they’ve seen few broods while combining this year. Bummer.

One more try tomorrow.

Pup came up sick Saturday so he stayed home today. Managed a few duskys after killing a few geese first thing in the morning. Gonna chase sharpies first thing tomorrow solo and then take the pup to the vet. Good mixed bag today here in NW CO even if it was disappointing having to leave the dog home. What’s Banks standing on? I assume it’s a whoa/steadiness exercise.

Loaded up Elmer and Fudd for a spin and a couple ridge hikes yesterday. My son shot his limit on Spruce Grouse, and we probably saw 20 more, but no Blues which is what we really wanted to find.

Though I know better than to travel this country without my Stihl, it turns out that 45 minutes of work with a bone saw equals about 26 seconds of what I'd guess is the same with a chainsaw - roughly 1/103 as efficient and not nearly as pleasurable.

The three we shot were in the same group of 8 or so. The two females had leaves and seeds in their crops, and the one male had needles, and definitely a darker color of meat. Small sample size, but it makes me wonder if different sexes focus on different nutrition this time of year or all year.

It is. It's just something I built out of scrap wood I had in the barn. I use it for steadiness, whoa, and other training. I picked up a few wood spoons from electric company in town and use those with the ladder. Turn those on its side and the ladder can serve as a teeter totter as he retrieves, turn them upright and elevate the ladder rather than a whoa barrel. Also use one spool and set the ladder at an angle.

I'll whoa him on one of the obstacles or in the middle of navigating and throw a frozen Chukar out and shoot blanks, send him on the retrieve, and make him work through different obstacles on the way back as he holds the bird and brings it to me.

The entire point is my version of helping the pup problem solve. I'm learning this dog training as I go.

I'll tell ya he's now a confident little booger on ladders, the kids have to throw the ladder down from the trampoline in order to keep him off while they're jumping! Let's hope it translates to field and water. Yesterday was his first official hunt in new territory. He had zero hesitation burning through thick brush, fences, water crossing, or any other obstacles. I like to tell myself I helped with his confidence.
