Wifey has the iPhone tracking thing and I check in 3 or 4 times a day with the Garmin. She appreciates the waypoint included with the Garmin messages.

The pre-set messages with waypoint feature on the Garmin are super easy to use and greatly appreciated by my wife. I check in several times throughout the day and most importantly I send a message to let her know that I made it safely back to camp at the end of the day. If I don't check in, my wife would be calling the game Warden to request a check of my last known whereabouts. No such calls have been needed so far but she wont let me leave for a western hunt without the name and phone number of the Warden that covers the area that I plan to hunt. I started doing that years ago plus outfitters numbers. Not perfect but it does provide some reduction in anxiety. Hunting at home is bit different but at 76 I have certain places I hunt that I write down on wipe board exactly where I will be. My son and friends I hunt with know these spots. I do check in frequently via text. Sometimes you just have to be aware your wife worries more as you age. It's not a loss of freedom IMO, just being considerate of your wife and being self aware as you age happens. I added trekking poles several years ago to increase stability in woods etc that do help a lot and also helps wife in her thoughts.

We track each other with phone app. She often rides horses alone. I often hike and hunt alone.

For me I wouldn't consider to tracking. While I hunt alone, checking in lets her know things are all good. She is the only that knows where I am so If I don't check in she knows something is wrong.

Garmins Inreach has an option for you to start a track and send the link to whoever. I believe it updates every 15 min.

She lets me go anywhere in the world as long as I send her a track.

assume they can’t track cell phones without service? Mine is on airplane mode typically when in the mountains. My inreach burns through batteries too fast if the tracking function is on..

My daughter tracks me because my wife is almost always with me.
There have been times when I was late getting home and my wife calls our daughter to see where I’m at.
I always carry a PLB when hunting and my iPhone has satellite 911.

Always ... Traveling to and from hunting and fishing as well as check ins during the day when I am resting.... agreed to at least twice a day. I use Zoleo. I do the same when she and the kids are traveling. Too much can happen.

Once I started taking my boy backpacking at age 5, wife wanted me to hook the inreach mini on him so she could see where he was at. I never leave him alone, but in the event we get separated or Im incapacitated, he knows how to hit SOS. Kid now knows SOS in morse code too at the age of 8. Things have changed a little since age 5 now that hes 8. Inreach mini still sends a tracking log every 30 min for $0.10, costs $2-3/day while hunting with him a few days or so a month. No big deal. I now have an iphone capable of satellite SOS and texts so we each have a way to call for help if separated. I no long send texts through the inreach and just use my iphone. I have the cheapest $7.99/mo plan so its not $$. Wife is happy, boy loves hunting with me, I get to raise a hunting partner and future packer haha.

I have also trained him with as much survival knowledge as possible, hoping he never uses it. He carries multiple fire starting methods that he has practiced, emergency bivy, I quiz him on navigating and location awareness, he knows the rules of 3, and the procedure to follow in an emergency. Stay put, call for help if possible, build shelter/fire, then water if needed, food last. Smoke signaling, basic first aid.

Wife n I should do constant location sharing too, that wouldnt hurt. I rarely have service while hunting but it could help in an emergency. Also need to send her and my FIL (former SAR heli pilot), who are the inreach emergency contacts, a map and hunt plan before we go out. I havent taken him on any severe weather hunts yet, but even fair weather can get you in the backcountry.
