Alright guys I have a question so I have a 7mm-08 i shoot 140gr sst and 120gr sst but I got thinking the other day the 7mm-08 is a 7mm bullet in a 308 case right? If so why couldnt 7mm bullets that are 100 grains work in the case then you could have 100gr 7mm-08 for varmints? Also the highest gr i know of is 162 for the 7mm-08 but why couldn't 150 or 172 gr 7mm bullets work? Im just trying to understand the weights and customization of it

I’ve shot bullets from 115 grain up to 175 out of mine depending on what I was doing. I finally just decided to go with 150’s for everything

Buy a reloading manual, please.

They would, to an extent, but likely not be optimal due to powder capacity or barrel twist rate. The long, heavy projectiles need a faster rate of twist. The short, light varmint bullets prefer a slower rate of twist. Years ago, Remington loaded a 55gr. 30-06 load (in a plastic sabot). It sucked.

7-08 would be blowing a lot of powder just to shoot varmints smaller than a coyote and would be giving up a lot of speed if you're wanting to hunt big game larger than deer. You'd be best going with a 120-140gr. all-copper rather than a 162 lead-core if you want to optimize penetration.

You can load any 7mm bullet in a 7-08 assuming twist and coal are taken in to account. No other constraints. My daughter shot a moose with a 150 partition I hand loaded out of a 7-08

If you want to go light, Hammer Bullets makes a 67 gr 7mm bullet. They also have a 90 gr Hammer Hunter in 7mm that looks pretty neat.
I couldnt believe what a 67 grain bullet would be like the speed you could get outta that sucker would be insane

Thats what I was thinking and it seems pretty cool now granted I have no clue about twist and coal but it still seems cool. Whats your thoughts on powders? Is there a powder to make the bullet go faster or whats the powder about

This is the point where I think of the "you were so worried about if you could you didn't consider if you should" thing
Pfff I have gunsmithing experience (I put a scope on without help😌) but no im just wondering trying to understand things better

Put expanding bullet into vitals = dead animal. You can load any weight you want as long as twist rate and bullet RPM will stabilize it. Heavier bullets typically means higher section density, deeper penetration, higher ballistic coefficient (sheds velocity slower, deflects less from wind). Lighter typically means the opposite of that and faster velocities. Some powders with a case/bullet combination do offer better velocity potential at same pressures.

140 gr, 150 gr, 160, 170..

It i was you id load some 150 eldx for deer and some 110 gr vmaxs for varmits and have two loads. That 150 is a sweet compromise between bc and keeping some muzzle velocity. I shoot the 162 out of my 7rm. By all means the 162 would probably shoot great out of yours too.

First off, the 7mm08 is a fantastic cartridge.

Second, go as low weight as you like. As far as 175gr? If you have the twist and the mag length to support it send it.

Yeah I dont reload but I know a friend who does so I may have him whip up some 150 eldx or those 110s your talking about also whats your opinion on lead bullets? They have 7mm bullet cast for lead like you would do on a muzzleloader. How would those perform?

Most definitely its fantastic just slept on

I would only do the 175gr if I had a higher more better rifle so I could utilize longer barrels and twist and all that

Honestly, I think you’d better stick to factory ammo. Find something that groups good and use it for everything.
