Alright guys I have a question so I have a 7mm-08 i shoot 140gr sst and 120gr sst but I got thinking the other day the 7mm-08 is a 7mm bullet in a 308 case right? If so why couldnt 7mm bullets that are 100 grains work in the case then you could have 100gr 7mm-08 for varmints? Also the highest gr i know of is 162 for the 7mm-08 but why couldn't 150 or 172 gr 7mm bullets work? Im just trying to understand the weights and customization of it

I’ve shot bullets from 115 grain up to 175 out of mine depending on what I was doing. I finally just decided to go with 150’s for everything

Buy a reloading manual, please.

They would, to an extent, but likely not be optimal due to powder capacity or barrel twist rate. The long, heavy projectiles need a faster rate of twist. The short, light varmint bullets prefer a slower rate of twist. Years ago, Remington loaded a 55gr. 30-06 load (in a plastic sabot). It sucked.

7-08 would be blowing a lot of powder just to shoot varmints smaller than a coyote and would be giving up a lot of speed if you're wanting to hunt big game larger than deer. You'd be best going with a 120-140gr. all-copper rather than a 162 lead-core if you want to optimize penetration.

This is the point where I think of the "you were so worried about if you could you didn't consider if you should" thing

You can load any 7mm bullet in a 7-08 assuming twist and coal are taken in to account. No other constraints. My daughter shot a moose with a 150 partition I hand loaded out of a 7-08
