Is chasing Wyoming permits worth it?

The entire hunting atmosphere in the west is mind boggling. We are seeing anti out of state movements for all species across all spectrums. The states don’t want average working class men and women hunting in their states. That is clear and evident despite what anyone says. The idea is to cater to the ones with the deepest pockets and those willing to hire outfitters. Mostly it’s just turned into a money making scheme. I’m just not sure that is the best idea when hunting culture in general is dying. We lose more and more hunters every year. Where things are headed is pay to play for everything.
Not saying it should be NO limits on none residents at all either. It should be. The points systems and price of tags though basically feel like extortion. Not actual extortion of course, nobody is breaking any legs. Emotional extortion though I’d say yes.
The threat is basically Pay us now for maybe over a decade or more or watch your bucket list dream go down the toilet.
I would have to imagine it has already backfired on them In a lot of ways. When you are young you have dreams but no money. You get older you get a little money but now your 40 thinking, my goodness I’ll be 60 before I draw this tag! Not to mention then maybe give some outfitter an additional 6-20k. Or just DIY it with little to no actual elk hunting experience. Not everyone is like me where I’ll come out and just go to go with no tag. At the end you are wrapped in maybe up to 50k to MAYBE kill ONE elk :cautious:
Let me tell you guys something. I think something that is lost on a ton of western guys. You can kill a BOAT LOAD( not a exaggeration.) of whitetails on DIY hunts in eastern states for what it would cost to kill one elk in Wyoming and many other western states. No draws, no points, Just buy a license (which is usually like 100 bucks.) have a set limit of deer you can kill, in many cases thats all but infinite in antlerless deer. The value for a HUNTER, not a ego antler obsessed maniac, a man or women who just loves the outdoors and loves to hunt period, is NOT there in the west. You may not get the bluffs and vistas of the west but you are hunting a very abundant species at a reasonable price. I expect to see the value of whitetails in the east just continue to climb and western states just to continue to diminish. Not that one is better then the other but from a purely financial standpoint.
We visit my wife’s family every year in the summer in Wyoming. I fish, I hike all over anywhere I want to go and it cost me what the fishing license cost and I LOVE Wyoming. It’s becoming a second home and it’s talk of relocating eventually. So, it’s not a bash on the state at all. Just an observation as an average blue collar solid middle class middle aged guy who has done basically EVERYTHING in the outdoors except for western hunting and offshore fishing.
Ya shout it from the roof tops. Gotta make my government loan this morning

I hope you guys are right about people giving up on it...

I’m already in this year but next year I’ll pay half your tag fees if you have 10 or more points and point share with me. Going for my 3rd bull tag since 2022 in Wyoming and I've got about 50% odds in the regular. Pays to have friends that buy points and like to talk about hunting more than actually hunting I guess....Also pays to apply every year as there's always a chance to pull a tag in the random.

You can rack up points, wait 2 decades, not know chit about elk hunting and come out to maybe shoot a 310" bull off the road in one of the desert units or spend about $800/tag and hunt elk every handful of years in some of the coolest country in the west to hunt elk in...
At the end you are wrapped in maybe up to 50k to MAYBE kill ONE elk :cautious:
Actually, listen to thig guy^^^. It ain't worth applying anymore lol

Get outta my head🤯

You aren't going East to kill a boatload of whitey does? Lace em up. mtmuley
Haters going to hate. Thats fine. Opinions are like buttholes. Maybe im a drugged out looney tune? I don’t care. Either way. It’s no way to counter that argument with random ridicule and blah blah blah tough guy chit. Yes, I meant boat load. Unlimited doe tags are out there in a few eastern states. Access is easy also. Crossbows in Archery season. Scopes on inline muzzleloaders. No draws, no points and otc cheap licenses. A elk is just a stupid elk. A mule deer is just a stupid mule deer. They all eat basically the same they all die the same. If your caught up in the media hype and think Cam and Joe and Steve and Randy are Gods thats fine. I get it. I’m talking pure Financially sensible easy access over the counter hunting. That’s why collecting points for many won’t be worth it.

I’d rather clip my toenails than drive 30 minutes to hunt/shoot a doe whitetail. To each their own. 🙂

Dude I'm with you! The price of a cape buffalo has totally priced out the common man. That Ernest Hemingway was full of chicken feathers!
Name me one book Hemingway wrote without googling it. Also Hemingway was a cuck and loved men.. just sayin.

Start saving now. May I suggest a good index fund? One day an experienced guide will be blessed to have you for your hunt of a lifetime. Tip him well, maybe 20# of marinated whitetail doe medallions..
