Idaho 47 elk (currently hunting)

Well, i was one of the lucky 15 to draw the 47 muzzy hunt. Ive drawn it once before and the elk numbers were crazy. This year... not so much. Ive hiked to the tops of canyons and glassed for hours and hours. Ive only seen 2 elk so far and its day 4. They are quiet from the archery pressure last month, but ive seen 3 bulls leave in trucks. So, they're around! Im out here for the whole 14 day season and plan to pound some dirt for the next few days. Most unfortunate part of the unit, there are roads that lead to every part of it... anyway, ill keep you updated. Good luck to everyone out there, and stay safe.

It's been 20 years since I hunted unit 47. It's still beautiful country. I hope you find the elk.

Day 6 has come and passed... ive put about 60 miles on my boots and hours on the glass. Tough hunting. The rut seems to have ended, nothing is coming into cow calls. 80+ degree weather, A lot of the aspen leaves have fallen so its like walking on potatoe chips, the full moon, and the controlled deer hunters that just came in are making it challenging to get on elk. Ive seen one 6 point bull so far. Im going to keep hammering but would be happy with a 5 point moving forward. Hopefully some cooler weather and clods will hit this weekend. Got some cool pics so far though.

46 is part of the tag as well, but after the depredation hunt out there last year, im hesitant to head that way.

well, passed on a 4x5 little raghorn this morning. Talked to a couple other hunters who have seen over 20 bulls. I guess pounding the creek bottoms is not the way to go. They gave me some good ideas and areas to hit. Gonna head into twin for some real food then get back after it this evening.

Day 7... you cruel day, you. Lessons learned for sure. My muzzleloader misfired on a nice 5x5 bull at 25 feet. Turns out, if you hike a lot with your rifle loaded, you will slowly loose the powder through the nipple. Barely even a puff of smoke, but enough to make the bull run away. Time to drink my depression away for the night and get back after it tomorrow.

My hunt is officially over. Ended up chasing bulls the last few days before the deer hunters came in. My buddy got ghosted by a 400" bull at 300 yards and i was on 2 seperate 330" 6 points that ended up crossing onto private before i could close the distance. Once deer season started, there were hunters hiking through every draw and pushed all the elk onto the private ( who is an outfitter ). Bummed i didnt tag out on an amazing controlled hunt, but had the opportunities. Im 100% happy with the effort i put into the hunt. Over 120 miles on my boots and I had a great time.

Not sure what rifle you’re using, but losing powder doesn’t sound right.

I was using a knight ultra light .50 cal. I was hiking without a cap on and was slowly losing powder.
