Haul Rd Hunters Turo joins Uhaul

I see A BUNCH of those trucks and vans on the haul road.
I wonder if the issue is damage or stink?
Either way, that will be a lot of lost revenue. It must have been a difficult decision.

I took a turo truck up there in 2024. I was just honest with the guy renting the truck. Told him where I was going. He said if I blew a tire or broke the windshield I would have to pay to fix it and I was fine with that.

I haven't rented a vehicle for the Haul rd but have for the McCarthy road , Steese hwy and Taylor Hwy. I use private rental companies and tell them where ai am taking it. They dont give you the nicest. Some have and extra fee. Some you have to convince them that this isnt your 1st rodeo. The issue is damage. Kills suspension. Windows. Tires. And much higher rate of crashes. Add to that the cost of a breakdown. Just not good business with a nice vehicle.

Any experience with Alaska 4X4's their website says they are okay with gravel roads and the prices were pretty cheap. I just don't know if there is a catch that I am missing.

I have used them. Zero issues. I actually had a reservation through them for this fall. Then I started seeing rumblings of more then one person getting hosed when they went to pick up. I reached out to make sure I was all good. I got no response so I emailed. Again no response. I canceled reservation and went elsewhere. Granted I book over a year in advance so I have time for shenanigans. Bookings go fast

I take it back on the good pricing. I switched it to Aug/September (like i should have to begin with) and it was not a number I was prepared for. AK hunts are like point creep to me. Everytime I think that I can afford it one portion of the trip doubles in price. Is $3500 to $4000 really what a truck/van rental is going to be going forward?

Depends who you get it from when. I paid $2500. Total due up front. Thats for 2 weeks+. But yeah the closer it gets the higher it gets. And if you dont pay 100% upfront and choose to pay 100% at the counter like through expedia those reservations get lost. Mostly because you agreed to $2500 a year ago and now its $4k.

Yikes. My Alaska hunts are really starting to look like a pipe dream.

Yep, I realized a couple years ago I'm priced out of my Alaska moose hunt dreams unless some sort of life changing money thing happens. I just can't fathom spending that much on a hunt compared to doing something amazing as a family trip instead. I just can't justify spending it only on myself.

I have made multiple posts and comments on this. I have been trying to to a caribou trip with my wife for 6 years now and every time I think its going to happen either availability disappears or prices go up. Unless I am missing something to do a non haul road hunt for caribou it will be roughly $15k to $20k. That's for air transport, rental vehicle and trophy/meat transport from AK to MT for 2 people. My wife and I make a decent wage but it still just makes me sick to think about spending that much money on a trip and it not be a sheep.....

100% I posted this exact thing. When did Caribou become a premier hunt worth that money. On the other hand there is still a few decent accessible hunts that dont require bush flights and are not the haul rd or draw. But nobody is going to tell you where. Gotta research it.

Based on my Haul Road experiences I wouldn't hesitate to take a Honda Accord up there.

I've never understood the "drama" associated with that road. Anyone here ever driven on a gravel road before? FFS how far is it paved from Coldfoot North now?

Worst case I ever heard of was some Eastern Tenderfoots getting excited after shooting a bou and locking their keys in the rig.

I was traumatized one time when some obviously ghey lispy thing woke us up while sleeping on top a camper shell to ask if we had any cigarettes. FFS. " Do you half any ciggarelfs"?

Those roads can be great and all of a sudden not. Especially at the bottom of hills. Problem is guys get comfortable and start driving fast. Hit frost rifts and lose it. I dont worry to much about those roads but the amount of accidents suggest caution be taken. As far as boredom. You must live a stress free life or are numb to the beauty. I could sit and stare for days. Super jealous of anyone who gets to see it everyday. There was a time I could chase griz but no more. They now seam to know that. I see more.
