Ahhh....Friday afternoon, in the back office of the house, kids playing outside, wife yacking on the phone (or talking to herself in the next room? ...note to self, run by the pharmacy and re-up on the meds ;) )...hunting gear spread all over hell-in-back in front of me as a pare things down to leave next Friday for archery deer/elk. Go figure that we're gonna get another shot of hot weather move in just about the time I'm leaving! Falls coming and life is good!

That rambling all being said....anyone hearing anything out there yet?

Hoping that the bulls will at least be thinking about moving some cows around...hate to think (I know its early but its the only time off slot I could get :( ) that its gonna be so early that most of the elk hunt will be spent sitting water and wallows rather than calling. Buddy got back from scouting for his Rosie hunt over on the coast and said nothing was talking- not even the bulls on the refuge were making a peep but those coastie elk tend to be a bit more quiet anyway. Anybody with some (calling?) secrets they want to share for early season elk hunts??????

Marv,

Good to hear you're getting revved up for the elk.

We passed through Yellowstone on Monday. The mature bulls all had velvet hanging.

I prefer hunting the early rut as I opine that the mature bulls come in to calls much easier before they are all cowed up. However, 90% of the time they come in quiet and sneeky from my experience.

Tyson I heartily agree....once they are deep into the cows (at least in most of my past experiences) they'd rather circle em' up and head out of dodge before taking on yet another battle. There are those that do still come slobering in though and that defiantely gets the blood pumping!

I just haven't ever gone chasing bulls in August before and I'm noy much of a sit tight and wait guy. We're usually 2-3 weeks later than this but I'm willing if they are and maybe we'll blunder into a buck or two along the way. :)

What were you doing down in Jellystone? Spending quality time with the fam before having to share a tent with the Mooseman ??

That's great Marv. Keep the prep info coming...two months til I go... so in the meantime I'll hunt vicariously thru your stories.

Hope you rack up some Geezer points podnuh.

Not that i am some expert but in the last 5 years i found that it is touchy to try and bugle or even cow call sometimes before the 2nd week of sept.
I have had lone bulls go the other way to a cow call at times. Dont know if they are call smart or just dont want the hassle of having cows that early.

Thanks Oak....I'll need all the luck the Eberlestock can carry!!

or just dont want the hassle of having cows that early
....guess they are smarter than we give them credit for! :D

Marv, about the best advice I can give you is: if you tag out early & have an evening available for a local watering hole;) ...go ugly early.:D

Marv,

Here's a pic from YNP to pep you up.

Marv- It may sound crazy but "rattle" a little. Don't get after it just some soft clanking really. Bulls are always sparring when they are coming out of velvet and in batchelor groups. Very natural for bulls to do that this time of year and the sound seems to draw a crowd sometimes. They're just curious because they are sizing each other up before the rut....doesn't always work but it does sometimes...

Hmmmm thanks Kelly....will give it a shot- got 8 days to play!

Oscar.....most of the rest of us were looking AT the bone.....not FOR the bone! What does schmalt's Playboy post got ya all rev'd up or the Mrs. been gone too long there bruddah? ;) :D Me thinks it may be YOUR wanker dragging in the water by the time Tyson drags yer arse around them "rolling hills" ......

call,, locate and then lace up the running shoes. I try to loacte and only call again if I need to get my bearings again. then high tail it, cow calling along the way occasionally. I learned from my mistakes during early season by over calling (bugling). I like to get in their face before getting aggressive on the calling and only do when I feel it is my last resort. just my .02... everday is different tho, hard tell how they are going to react.

Adios mi amigos!

It's time to hit the road and chase after deer/elk....only nine+ hours till camp.
Hopefully they'll fly straight and true!

Ya'll behave now ;) hump
