Hunters will be able to shoot as many as 220 gray wolves in Montana this fall under rules adopted Thursday by state wildlife commissioners.
The hunt is scheduled to begin in early September and is expected to reduce the predator's Montana population by about 25 percent to 425 wolves.
A wolf hunt is also planned in Idaho, where officials have proposed no statewide harvest targets or quotas.
Wolves were taken off the endangered species list in an unprecedented move by Congress this spring in Montana, Idaho and parts of Utah, Washington and Oregon.

Good news...as long as Molloy doesnt shut it down again.

HOWA is sending me a 7mm-.08 just for this event. I can hardly wait to get out and chase them. I hope the quota in our area stays open way into the snow days. Would love to chase them with snow on the ground.

Wonder what they taste like?

Sounds like they are looking at starting things off right. Glad they didn't set it at around 70-75 like last time

If your quota runs out, I'm sure there will be other areas still open. The West Fork of the Root will be one of those. We have a large quota to fill.

Ben, you take the first bite, and I might think about it.

Probally taste like tapeworms!

I'll be hunting Elk in the mountains in SW MT just hoping to see a couple wolves this year for sure! Just make sure you call in constantly to make sure the quota hasn't been filled for your area. Guys have gotten burned on that one in 2009.

Dreamin' - The season structure for this year is much different than last year. MT has 14 Wolf Management Units instead of a couple. Within those units, there are individual quotas and in some instances subquotas due to the incident around the Park. That will help keep folks out hunting longer. I'd also say that HD 250 isn't too far from the Big Hole & Beaverhead, and I'm sure some of the Rooters can get you on to some wolves if necessary.

If any rooters want a tagalong wolf hunting, I am fairly new to the area and am ready willing and able. I spent a dozen days afield during bear season and found a couple of drainages with a ton of sign both sides of the highway but spotted no wolves. Oh yeah, I live right below Blodgett and the wife saw a wolf in the road super early morning 2 weeks ago about 1/2 mile from the forest service....

I'll bet that one is dead now. She liked the taste of Lamb.
