fitness goals for this fall?

I like Triathlons.. But mostly because I ge to wear Spandex ;)

.
Another biker reminded me last weekend that the only people that think we look good in spandex biking short are other bikers, and everyone else think we look stupid. yep, i agree. But damn, without that spandex the chaffing can get pretty intense on the boys and azz

Moosie good luck on the race in 3 weeks. let us know how it goes.

a 1/2 mile in 17 seems good to me. I think my first race I ended up swimming 400M in around that 17 min time, that was an eye opener.. The last race I did the swim was 750M and I think I finished a touch over 16 min.

A 1/2 mile is 880 yards It doesn't seem far until you put water between the place you start and finish ;)

Most people I know HATE the water part.

A lap in our pool (Back and forth) is 50 yards. We train at 20 laps or 1000 yards. My record for 1000 yards is 17mins 52 sec.

Last year in my first Tri (Sprint) I did :

Swim 0.59 miles :23:05.81
> T-1:4:07.50
Bike 14.2 miles :52:43.80
> T-2:1:54.60
Run 3.1 miles :29:22

Total Net Time :1:51:05.6

The swim is actually .59 Miles. I'd like to get that down to about 18.5 mins Hard when people are kicking you in the face :p,
Shave my T-1 time down by a Min. to 3 mins
Bike at 48 mins
T-2 about the same
Run I'm sure won't change much, I suck at running :( (30 mins)

Hopefully Net time 1:41....

This is kind of inspiring me. I think I would like to try that sprint format. I could handle the bike and running part now but would need to hit the water pretty seriously to pull it off. Is the sprint format fairly uniform?

You're right this inspiring me too. I think I'll go to Roaring Springs and watch milf's chase there kids around. That's as far as I go for swimming.

Good luck Moosie. You better get in shape. I'll need you to pack out our deer in NM. :)

The last one I did at the end of May was a 750M swim, 12.4 Bike, and 3.1 run. I was happy with the swim, OK with the bike and a little burnt out on the run

Swim 16:01
T1 1:39
Bike 40:33
T2 :56
Run 25:13
Total time was 1:24

The one thing I have noticed is that you don't seem to get burned out with the workout thing because you changing the training so often

Most all sprint's are the same format. Give'em a try (pun intended) as they're a blast. If my fat arse (I think Moosie still has photo evidence) can do it, anyone can. I've always met my goal of not coming in last... ;)

1-pointer, If you look at the race results I think 27 people came in after you and several didn't finish.

I came in 72 of 176 that competed in the Sprint. But it was a longer race. The Emmett Sprint Triathlon swim is only 500 yards for the "sprint" and some others are only "440". For some reason they are all different. The Run is almost always 5k (3.1 Miles and the Bike varies from 12-16 miles).

The guys I'm training with are better then me. That's a fact. I swam today (without a wetsuit so a little slower) and got 19 mins and 30 seconds for the 1/2 mile.

Next year I think I might try the Ironman Boise, We'll see how plump the winter makes me.

It's only the 70.3 not the 140.6 .... But It's something to shoot for. My guess is I'll be the Fattest guy there by 30+ pounds. All those type athgletes are a Buck50 !!!!

Is the sprint format fairly uniform?
Not really. Olympic, half IM, and full IM are the only standard distances. Sprints can vary quite a bit, but are all shorter than an olympic. They also often have the swim in a pool rather than open water.

B.G. , Isn't the only pool Tri around Boise the Y-TRI ? from the YMCA ? I thought the Emmett, ParkCenter, Lucky Peak, Etc were all outside in open water ?

B.G. Are you doing any this year ?

Have you looked at the entry fee yet? You get raped at official IM events.

Btw, if you want an Oly race with a ridiculously easy swim, put your name in the hat for the Burley Spudman. It's a downriver swim and the current is so strong you could probably just float on your back and be done in under 30min. The bike & run are as flat as they get too, making for an extremely fast course.

Locally the sprints are mostly open water swims (open: Y-Not, Emmett, Redfish, Rush, Rigby, Blacktail, Twin Falls, Bear Lake, Deschutes, pool: YMCA Spring, Pocatello), but I think most sprints across the country tend to be in pools. Maybe I'm wrong though, I've only done one sprint. Occasionally you'll see a sprint that is reverse order (swim last). I think Pocatello is like that.

Are you doing any this year ?
I did the Boise 70.3, YMCA Spudman, and Burley Spudman so far this year. I'm doing the Emmett Oly also and that'll probably be my last race this season. Time to go scouting/hunting after that...

I just got back in town.... a whole week away from computers. Had a good time.

For those that haven't done a tri yet, you are missing out. If nothing else, there is some great scenery out there if you know what I mean. I did my first one years ago on a dare. It was a sprint race that I trained for a grand total of 3 weeks. I bought a used bike at a pawn shop and ran in old Nike tennis shoes . I finished, but it was ugly.

I tend to live as dissolute a life as is compatible with staying reasonably fit and the training is a good way to stay in shape over the spring and summer. Fall vacation time is saved for hunting.

I do the longer races because I'm naturally slow. Sprint races are run all out. In the longer races you don't go as hard. I'm the kind of person that would rather run 10 miles slowly than one mile all out. Long races are not about who goes the fastest, they're about who slows down the least. And, like most things in life, you get out of something what you put into it. The harder you work for something, the more satisfying the accomplishment is- which is also the allure of DIY hunting........

Billy Goat, good job on the Boise half. Tough race for sure. If you're ever looking to do a full. redman is half the price of the Mdot races.

Moosie, good luck on your upcoming sprint. Don't worry, once you do one and know what to expect, you can generally get by on less training, unless you're looking to place.

And by the way, NOBODY looks good in bike shorts........

I've got my eye on IMAZ '10 (it's in my hometown and a relatively flat course). I may be a one-and-outter "going long", at least until my kids are older anyway. Nevermind the costs, properly training for a full just involves too much time for me (as I'm sure you are aware), especially having other interests. All the guys I know that race IM's do nothing else.

Are you in OK? I did the Harvest Moon half last Sept in Denver. It kicked my arse, but my taper was 2 weeks spent climbing CO 14ers and muley hunting wilderness at 12,000+ ft. That was probably a flawed plan from the get-go, but it was a fun trip. :D

I did IMAZ in 06 when it was a spring race....got a PR on the course(sub 12). Its flat and fast, no doubt.
Good choice.

As far as the time thing goes, you're right, its easy to get carried away like some people and train monster volume. I'm like you though and have a bunch of other interests and work committments that dictate the schedule. I'll generally swim once a week, ride 3X and run 4X. As the race gets closer the long ride/run gets longer and everything else is the same. I'm lazy and want the most return for the least investment.

I'm close to Ok just on the Tx side. I bet that Denver race hurt if your body wasn't used to the altitude. I've done my share of climbing in Co, Wy, and Wa but never at the sustained heart rate that you would be at for a half. Years ago I did a PT test at 5,000 ft w/ a 3 mile run and I was gassed afterward.

Given the choice, I'd go muley hunting in the mountains too, and do the race as an afterthought.

PS Schmalts- your wife's just being nice to you.... : )

Moosie- Thanks for the uplift!! :D Now I don't have to kick my dog. Beings that I'm not doing a whole lot of big trips for the next year I am seriously considering trying to do a progression of races leading to a full IM. We'll see how it goes. It's pretty apparent that at 5'10" 260# that I'm not the most disciplined person... ;) So while it's a good idea, it's up to me to follow through. I'll keep you posted.

Pointer,

If you're looking for a progression, aim for an olympic distance race in May, a half in July sometime and then see if you want to build up to the full in Sept....

Once you start training consistantly, you'll drop the weight fast.

Good luck,

G

G- That's about what I had thought would be the progression. I need to look at some race dates, as I'd like to everything forward by a month to 6 weeks. I'd hate the full and hopefully a good tag to be at odds...

Agreed....hunting by far has priority for me too.

But even if you don't do the race, the fitness benefits will be there should a wilderness hunt opportunity arise.
