I'm guessing a lot of us get started this way. I remember killing my first squirrel on a hunt with my dad when I was six. While back in Virginia visiting my family this winter,I got to share a special hunt with my youngest son who is six years old. We made a real hunt out of it and Gareth made a perfect 25 yard shot to kill his first squirrel. His squirrel was the star ingredient of this amazing gumbo.

Feel free to add any other firsts of your kids to this thread if you want.

I was fortunate to be there when my son killed his first blacktail buck, and will never forget it. Did it all by himself while I trailed along a hundred yards behind and was looking the other way. A very big day for me.

skimerhorn, we were in Rockingham County. Lots of fox squirrels in the lowlands. Not so many in the mountains.

Love seeing the big Fox. When I was a kid here in WI foxes were common but they seem to be pretty rare in most places these days. I wonder what happened to them?

Schmalts, I think they migrated down here to irritate the he** outta me during deer season! We have a TON of squirrels down here. . .could be the reason that we are seeing a few bobcats show up too.

Gerald- Awesome pics and experience! If Mr. Man can show me he's ready, I'm hoping to have a similar pic next fall. We were dealing with some eye dominance issues this summer, so his marksmanship was not at a level I would let him shoot at game. I'm thinking by next fall we'll have that sorted out. He loves to go with me hunting squirrels. Here's a pic from this past fall where him and I chased those 'tree huggers'!

Fox squirrels and greys differ a bit in their habitat preferences. I'd have to double check, but IIRC the foxes prefer edge and the greys more wooded/mature woods. There is not as much ground being farmed in WI now as there was in 1940. Could be the reason?
