Favorite Hunt?

That is by far the coolest and most well done hunt write up I've ever seen Oak.
The hunt of a lifetime for sure.

Amazing report/photos Oak. When you are up that high for that long, what do you do for water?
Water was everywhere. We just dipped our water bottles in and drank, as we were usually so high we could see the source. Probably not advisable at lower elevation.

My favorite hunt was when I killed my big bull last year. I've had a boat load of fantastic hunts with my dad and with buddies through the years, and some great solo hunts too. But in this hunt, it all came together in the end. I usually hunt pretty hard, busting ass and going beyond my physical limits to try and make it happen...and usually, it doesn't. On this hunt, I was cramped up at 11 am after busting through seemingly endless crotch deep drifts, heading up hill... knowing it was my last day of hunting for the year (day after Turkey Day)... and in the end..it paid off... the driving through a blizzard to get there that morning... the 8 degree temps... the hills, the cramps, the frozen water... all of it...

Thanks for the great stories guys.

I'm also a blacktail hunter, and everyone I've taken is special. But, my most memorable hunt happened when my 16-year-old son got his first blacktail buck. I had been taking him to the woods since he was five years old, taught him everything I knew. On this particular day I just followed him around...I had killed my buck the day before. I noticed he seemed to finally have it all together and was practicing the things I had taught him about moving slowly, keeping quiet, and trying to be a tree, etc. When the moment came I was looking somewhere else and was too far away to observe any details, but in the end, after some tracking, we found his buck that had bled out from the huge hole his 6.5 had blown in its neck. When it was all over and we were loading up the backpacks with meat he turned to me and said, "you know, I learned a couple of things today."

Second to that it was his Montana elk/whitetail hunt when he killed his first whitetail buck, one shot through the neck, on the run, fogged up scope, and it was the mature buck we had scouted out earlier in the season.

Every year and every season they just get better - do not think I have a favorite, yet. {dream hunt is and will be moose / caribou in AK}. Picking one, I say I enjoyed deer hunting this year with my 6 year old by my side just about as good as shooting my biggest bull or biggest deer and more then watching my dog work. (favorite to date even though I could not put antlers on any of the deer we saw.)

There are a few here on Hunttalk that have experienced Dall sheep hunting and know how hard but addicting it is. It is one hunt that any hard core mountain hunter should experience at least once in their lifetime. Not many animals you can hunt from 5:30 in the morning to 11:00pm at night. Here's the link to my hunt this year when I was finally able to connect with one.

By far the most physically demanding hunting I've ever done. It must be like child birth in that you don't remember the pain very long after the hunt. My wife is doing an eye roll right now.:D
