In a van, down by the river
So ive pretty much decided now to ditch big game hunting, besides the occasional rifle meat hunt. With el nino in full swing, is anyone else really excited about the coming hatch?

I hope the moisture and mild temps are going to lead to great hatches, especially for the desert species. So far where Im located the winter has been relatively mild; however the snow has been above avg.

In September I'll be taking 12weeks off for baby leave (x2) and I hope to squeeze in a trip down to Tx/NM/Az for quail. I've heard the numbers are way up in Tx. Hopefully the sharpies, huns, and chukars are up too!

Unless something changes in AZ we probably won't have much of a quail hatch at all. these last two months have been the hottest and driest on record. The temperatures in phoenix have been in the mid nineties for weeks now. Have to hope for a wet spring/summer! last year was one of the best for mearn's quail in decades

I've done pretty much the same with big game hunting. Not much desire there anymore. My love for working with birds dogs continues to be strong. Don't even care much about how many birds there are. For me it's about training and spending time together in the outdoors. Also enjoy the training time with the folks at the local club. On my 8th dog now and may yet train a few more. Wouldn't mind training a hunting falcon either.

We have hunted for 40 years in the SW corner of KS, and the long drought really took a toll on pheasant #s. On advice from locals, we didn't even go in '14. We returned last Nov, and found good recovery in bird #s. This fall could be even better, w regular moisture through the winter so far. Hopefully hail won't kill a bunch.

I hope it's a good hatch. Now I just need to figure out where to take Hank. Thinking either KS, IA, or SD. Which would you pick?
