Dog Broke Leg 7 Miles In

Title pretty much sums it up. Thankfully it was our smallest of the three poodles we have (26 lbs). Just something for those of you with dogs to think about. I never really gave it much thought.

It happened in about the worst possible place, halfway through a 1.5 mile long field of boulders. His name is Boulder, which I see the irony, he was having trouble walking (we think he’s just too old for this kind of activity now at 10) so we were helping him up and over the boulders and my wife set him up on one and before I could get a hand on him he leaned/collapsed back towards her after she had looked down to gain her footing and he fell about 4 feet and landed on his head and leg.

We didn’t think it was broken because he never whimpered or acted like it was that bad, even with my wife moving it all around, other than not putting full weight on it. We continued on a bit longer still trying to help him walk and got about a quarter mile from the end of the field of boulders and then he peed thick blood. My wife almost lost it and began thinking he was dying but we held it together and re-arranged gear so my wife could put him in her pack. She was a champ and packed him out the remaining 6.5ish miles. The last 5 or so is a very easy trail so that was good but even so the 8 mile hike out took us 9 hours which is about double what it should have taken.

Vet says he will be ok, just the broken leg. We suspect the blood was from the constant picking him up under his belly. Has quite a bit of bruising too but seems to be fairing ok. Won’t be taking him on any real hikes and will consider where we take our other two (both likely closer to 50 lbs) more cautiously. Thankful it turned out the way it did and wasn’t worse.

Other than that had a great Labor Day weekend!

Glad he is going to be ok! Took my lab (Rest in peace ole Revvy boy) out on a rails to trails bike ride. Running for miles was his thing, got to the turnaround and notice a limp, he had blisters on his pads from the gravel I guess. I had to wear him like a backpack (he held on pretty good with his front paws) for the entirety of the ride back. He was a big boy and it made me think about how I would get him out of certain places.

Hoping for a speed recovery for Boulder! But holy cow, covering 7 miles at 10?! My dogs are 10 & 11 and struggle to make it 1 mile through the neighborhood anymore.

That’s rough but glad to hear Boulder will be ok. It is a fear of mine having a dog get injured while hiking or hunting. As my dog is turning 11 I am limiting some hikes. Also evaluating how much I should do with her. She wants to go every trip but can’t keep up like she used to.

Glad it turned out all right. Dogs seem invincible for so many years until you start noticing little things.
Your wife is a rockstar carrying him out like that.

I seem to recall a similar thread and the discussion around how to pack out an injured dog and emergency kits to have on hand for dog injuries. Good reminder fordog owners to be prepared for the worst.
