In advance of the Nevada caucus.

From Bernie Sanders

"In my view, we must strengthen, not weaken our public lands system. Our public lands are national treasures for future generations.Public lands should be managed for the benefit and enjoyment of all Americans, and not just the oil and gas, mining, and timber companies that have had disproportionate influence in management decisions on federal lands. We can balance natural resource conservation AND appropriate the use of public lands to create jobs and promote economic growth. But to my mind, we must end the sweetheart mining concessions and leasing rate practices that allow these industries to profit at the expense of American taxpayers. We must ban all fossil fuel extraction from public land, and I have co-sponsored important legislation to do just that."

Hillary made a couple boilerplate statements that you would expect from a politician of her ilk. Sanders statements seem much more considered.

Pretty much sums up how I would think a lot of conservations feel, although I do think there is room for responsible fossil fuel extraction from public lands with thorough environmental analysis through NEPA and FERC regulations and increased consideration of migration routes.

I believe both are in the camp of being pro-public land advocates which comes as no surprise to me. Now the Republican candidates, that's an entirely different story.

Too bad they are wrong on so many other issues. That said at least they are on the correct side of this. From my perspective since I will not vote for any of the establishment republicans, and with no guarantee of Trump securing the nomination I don't have a lot of options.

Even if Bernie is partially right on Public Lands, his programs would bankrupt (IMO) folks who create the jobs in America. Can you imagine being stretched by this economy and all of a sudden you cannot pay your bills from his Tax ideas? John

Bernie is in the bag for Hillary but the DNC might not have let him in on it yet...or they did and he forgot.

I can not figure out what this country is going to do when all of us working people are gone.

If the extraction, oil& gas, mining etc industries didn't export their profits and import their losses, payed some taxes or pay full royalties, and maybe not leave all their messes to be cleaned up by the government,or sort of repair some of the damage they do I might feel some pity for them.
Bernie is talking about kinda holding their feet to the fire for a change.
Comply and pay what they should or maybe they need a time out.......
I do not want to see him give carte blanche to the Enviro-wackos tho.

But a solid statement like that is way more than any other candidate has said.....with a somewhat straight face.....................

A solid stance PRO Public Lands is a line I am looking for, eff the rest of the crap that has been yacked about.

Please share with me how mining companies, since 1977, have not paid taxes, not paid full royalties, not paid to reclaim, have gotten the government to clean up their messes for free, have not paid additional fees to clean up the legacy messes from old pre-1977 mining operations and have not paid to compensate for health issues that have resulted from those mining operations. I would really love to know. Mainly since I work at a mining operation that operates on Federal land and currently I pay about 40% of revenue to cover all those things you mentioned and I would really like to now how I can reduce those costs. As it stands today the taxpayers of this country make more money from each ton shipped than our owners do. If you can share with me how I can reduce that I am sure my owners would love to know. Might even get me a raise. Please enlighten me.

Bernie is saying some things you might like, but when he has to make a deal to fund his social programs he may just sell the Sportsman down the creek to pay for his Utopia. John

Hows that Coalstrip restore to original condition clause deal working out?
Maybe mining is doing better than pre 1977.
But now the burden is all on an underfunded, hamstringed EPA.

The import/export profit and paying little or no taxes by big oil is well documented.
Retired Rep.Bill Thomas told me that as a matter of fact the year he retired.

The lumber companies just don't want to pay a mill worker $16/hr anymore.Cuts the profit margin.
The owl BS over took the real problem, clear cuts and the run off too.

I am a conservationist and a carpenter.

I know Public Land use is pretty much the biggest concern on this sight. But I cant get past the thought of voting for a devout socialist. Have we not learned our lesson from the History of the socialist countries in the last 100 years?
When Bernie stomped Hillary in new Hampshire by more than 30% but they come away with virtually the same amount of delegates its obvious that the dems want and will make Hillary their candidate. Hopefully the turmoil among the republicans doesn't pay into the dems hands.

Yep. He is a raving communist lunatic that wants to tax everybody into oblivion. People that vote only because they worry about public lands, may be throwing the country under the bus for a single issue.

Bernie is honest (at least as much as a left-wing loony can be), but he will tax this whole country into disaster in the name of his income equality, welfare, nirvana state. Hillary is a criminal and should be in jail without discussion.

The oil and gas companies have made tons of money on public land, but so have ranchers. Where do you cut it off? There is bad and good with all, but there have been many gallons of fuel for your cars extracted from public lands.

If someone wants to vote for the salvation of public lands and throw the country and our security under the bus, then go for it, but I won't do it.

I agree.. I'm surprised at the hatred toward ranchers using public land on this sight as well. Not that I don't get it, but they are trying to make a living too and use the land to do it.

Surprised? By people wanting them to pay their fair share?

I ranch some now,worked in mining,steel worker,lumber mill,carpenter/builder.
I never said ALL.
I hate the abuse that has and is going on.
I do not think Bernie is a raving commie, old hippie type yes.
I do think everyone of the other candidates could give a flying figg to most of what we American tax payers think. And lie thru their Gov paid teeth.

They don't use it for free..
I'm sure I'll get hung on here for bringing up the rancher using the public land.

Nothing is free but welfare ranching is dam close for the ranchers...Now for the taxpayer not so much.

Lots of good ranchers out there most don't even need public land to make a living.
