My brother, Rob, and I just got back from Montana and I'm very envious of those who are lucky enough to live there. We were planning on deer hunting with a couple of friends, but got the chance to go over a few days early and hunt for elk. We spotted lots of elk on private ground, but we were hunting public. Rob got close on a small group with at least one bull, but he knew that shooting hours were past so we tried early the next morning ………. the elk followed a different script and we never found them again. Covered lots of miles in beautiful country but in the end no elk were harmed in the making of this hunt. We switched to deer mode, lots more miles covered in beautiful country again and on the last afternoon we had available to hunt we each got a whitetail. We headed back home beat physically, but renewed at the same time, and thankful for the chance to hunt. At least those backstraps will make the elk tag soup more palatable.
