Two days into the rising sun
So over the winter I amassed a couple deadheads found while working in the field, a skull cap from a buck I shot, and an entire intact head from a second buck I shot but never took care of. The warm days of spring were getting very interesting (disgusting) behind my shed… the flies and maggots were having a party, and the neighbor immediately downwind was probably wondering about the smell. Not sustainable. In a pinch, I tried to mitigate the issue but in the process might have stumbled on a new and improved “maceration” method for letting nature take its course without having to bury in dirt or submerge in putrid water that my dog wants to drink or roll around in.

With the specimens all tossed in a large plastic tote, I punched a hole in the bottom for drainage, then filled the tote with Tractor Supply pine shavings up to mid antler. I wet the whole thing down and also left it open to the rain. There is now a very active assemblage of flies and carrion beetles burrowing down into the shavings and I assume good things are happening. No smell whatsoever. No dealing with water, and won’t lose the teeth. I look forward to checking the result in a few months and will report back if this no fuss no muss method does the job.

I've got 2 pretty gross ones hanging in a tree out back, starting to get worried about squirrels and sun bleaching though.

I may join you in this noble pursuit

I did my buck from last fall a couple of weeks ago. I remembered I hadn't done it when I walked by it in the garage and caught a whiff...

Took 4 hours of simmering, pressure washing, and picking, but I got it done!

You can get a dermestid beetle starter kit pretty cheap. Alternatively, I've also known guys to tie the rack to a tree or cinder block with paracord, then toss the rack into a farm pond for a couple of months.

Wow, I thought I was the only one. I procrastinated taking it to the taxidermist to get euro’ed and when It finally thawed out I procrastinated again. When I went to grab most recently and maggots were falling out of it I decided it might be poor form to drag that into someone’s place of business.

So right now Ive been putting it in the back of my truck during the day and in my garage at night. Should be done in a week or so and I’ll give it a quick boil and bleach.

I had a fair head from last season that I did not get to.
Hair still on. I put it into my boil pot and simmered it for 2 days.
I added a 1/2 cup of 20 muleteem borax and a few drops af dawn. Everything came off and out with a spray from my garden hose.
I did not bother to bleach it.
