Construction, busy or slowing down

The other thing is… I almost never see project schedules anymore. It used to be customary to have a project schedule, critical path items identified, this week scheduled, a one week look ahead, etc.
updates distributed to all parties every week. That just simply does not happen and people look at you like you are insane if you suggest it should.
I share 4 week look ahead schedules every Friday with all subs on every project I'm running. Based on what i hear, I wish more PMs did that too.

The best is when we get sent to subgrade a parking lot or cut for curb and the concrete or asphalt guys are starting the same day...right up your ass. Makes for a great time. That's usually not on the pm that's on our boss actually.

Scheduling like that just leads to a bunch of angry people. I usually set the main schedule, then work hand in hand with the superintendent to keep and ideally beat the original schedule. Always easier to get done early than later!

I have talked to some subs that say they are slowing a bit. But in the high end customer world it is not, billionaires have moved in and need another house or two. But it’s the stupid money, $1,250sf type stupid.

There are black barndos and houses popping up everywhere you look around here still. I'm assuming blue state refugees considering they're painting something they intend end to be inside of during a Southern summer black.

Why are people painting metal boxes black and moving into them? I heard the interiors are likewise gloomy. Why?

I don't get the attraction to the black houses, black pole barn siding and black roofs either?
Butt ugly IMO.

I think social media is telling people it’s cool. It’s the new version of keeping up with the jonses.

How many of you construction guys wear tool bags?
Started out with bags on, worked my way up, went to school, now have successfully managed projects up to $20 million.

There are plenty of days I wish I was still in the field. Sometimes I miss the simplicity of it. Other days when it's -10 degrees and windy, or 90 degrees and dead calm, I'm pretty happy with what I'm doing.

I still have my tool belt. I just don't use it much anymore.
Hard to find anyone worth a damn around here.
Heard the going price was $400/sq.ft......so your $1000-1500 is insane.

We used to charge $150-250 sq. ft. for custom homes. Some had no limit.
I made $5/hr in 1975 in MT as a foreman. Minimum was $1.25/hr. Nationally.
By 1985 I was a finish carpenter and $150/hr was standard.

What is union wage for a carpenter now?

Bozeman sounds like a movie set.

We are starting a shop today. Rained all night. Clay field should be a joy to scrape the vegetation.
Hindsight construction management would have been a good path. Classmate of mine is retired from building high rise in Boston. I don't mind my small construction business, probably always wear bags. Hate office work anyway.
